One of the weirder things to me was having to argue with Western Leftists about St. Teresa and trying to explain it to them that demonising her in India was deeply chud coded.

I think libertarian free speech is in a very real sense already dead. The enormous cultural power associated with the term “free speech” is in its twilight years. More people will look at the world around them and ask themselves if this is actually working.

I prefer to articulate my political principles explicitly.
I hope with everything in me that liberal democracy doesn’t fail. But if it does, I want it remembered for posterity that some of us viewed the problem as an excessive commitment to overdemocratized discourse.

If your opinion of libertarian views on free speech doesn’t grow more and more negative as democratized discourse gets worse and worse at a certain point it’s time to ask yourself whether your opinions are actually based on anything.

I will die on the hill that the IDW began as an anti-free speech movement that in fact sought informal speech regulations against progressive excesses, and later morphed into more of a pro-free speech movement where everyone could spout whatever conspiracy theory they wanted.

The fact that the Epic of Gilgamesh contains a flood story is actually one reason historians don't view Genesis as a unique eyewitness account. It suggests flood narratives circulated through older Mesopotamian traditions and were adapted by different cultures over time.
"Many cultures have flood myths" is evidence that floods deeply affected ancient humans. It is not automatic proof that one single worldwide flood happened exactly as one later religious text describes it.
By that logic, since dragons appear in cultures across the world too, paleontologists should probably start looking for fire-breathing fossils.

@DerekPederson3 At risk of being cynical, the fear of getting primaried. I live in a purple area at best but all the democratic (or Republican) ads I get are about attacks from left. I get that's what primary is about but it does make me think how this Dems will act once elected.

The BBC is running a story trying to pull at our heartstrings for starving fathers in Afghanistan who are ready to sell their young daughters just to buy food. One man weeps while holding his seven-year-old twins, saying he'll sell one to feed the rest. Another already sold his five-year-old. I don't care how hungry I get I would never do this. Not in a million years. These beautiful, innocent little girls are being treated like goods to be traded by the very men who are supposed to protect them. Instead, they're guarded by monsters. Poverty and hunger are horrific, but selling your own child isn't an "impossible choice" it's a moral failure. The BBC can frame it as tragic desperation all they want, but we should be disgusted and outraged for the daughters, not feeling sorry for the fathers willing to do this. These children deserve real protectors, not men who see them as a survival asset. Absolutely sickening
