She’s a bit of an older girl. This morning she had no chance. She’s already a bit lighter with the fluid gone and she’ll get the best care possible. I’ve been too tired today to find a name. Any suggestions welcome. Her new life starts today (8/8)

I was upset about Alba last night but in one way it was lucky a report came in from 3 people. A street dog with a huge growth in an Irish bar on the other side of the island. I went to get her first thing today… (1/8)

Tony Blair: “I remember a conversation in the Brexit debate He said to me ‘you're this typical elite, trying to say you know more about it than I do’ But do you know what I said to them? I DO know more because I've been prime minister for 10yrs”

“Hominin species were likely dying out all the time,” says Prof Eleanor Scerri, head of the human palaeosystems group at the Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology in Jena, Germany. “It’s probably unusual that we are still around.” I’ve been saying this for a while. We hugely underestimate the influence of chance in human evolution and we’re simply very lucky to be here. Not through some sort of innate superiority: just chance. theguardian.com/science/2023/n…

The NHS may be broken, according to @UKLabour @wesstreeting, but here’s how to fix it. Prevention, Prevention, Prevention, Prevention…. 1. Prevent poverty. It’s the single biggest determinant of ill health, and health and social care demand, both now and in the future. Blair and Brown made good progress in reducing it. So it can be done. 2. Prevent illness, with a relentless focus on living well, self-care, mental health support and tackling the commercial determinants of illness. Dental disease is the commonest cause of childhood operations, and yet it’s almost 100% preventable. 3. Prevent existing risks and diseases getting worse, with evidence-based screening and a substantial shift in resources to primary, community and social care 4. Preventing waste and medical harm, by ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, from the right people at the right time. This is the toughest nut to crack, as it requires adequate numbers of well trained and well rested staff working in safe, clean environments with the right equipment. We currently spent three times as much litigating harms from maternity care than we do on maternity care. This is a permanent disaster and would be a very good place to start. Instead of repeating our mistakes, we need to learn from them. The Secret Barrister 🦋
The Secret Barrister 🦋@BarristerSecret·
I made my mind up about Keir Starmer’s character years ago. It’s a highly personal account I now share for the first time, as Sir Keir is poised to lead Labour into government. In 2015, I set up an anonymous Twitter account called The Secret Barrister. The idea was to draw public attention to problems that I saw daily in the criminal justice system. The account achieved mild success, and led to the publication of several books. As part of my rampant self-publicity, I would do “Legal Live Tweets” - exercises in tedious pedantry whereby I would sloppily apply rudimentary legal knowledge to popular movies. A number of lawyers began to follow me. At some point, Keir Starmer became one of them. Then the rumours began. Reddit was the worst. A couple of right-wing blogs fanned the flames. The Times mischievously floated the idea. Labour Party members joined the speculation. The question kept recurring: IS KEIR STARMER THE SECRET BARRISTER? After all, we were both barristers. What further proof was needed? Despite what, it was clear to all, was a concerted international media campaign - photographers on my lawn, journalists haranguing my grandma, my Welsh flatmate answering the front door naked to the world’s press - Keir Starmer said nothing. Not a single word to dispel the rumours. Not a single speech in Parliament. Not a single line in his manifesto promising to correct the record. And now, as he stands on the precipice of power, what has he said in the course of this campaign to dispel these wicked whispers? To offer the nation the reassurance that it craves? Nothing. So it is that I remain at the mercy of conspiracy theorists, mischief makers and Kwik Fit fitters. And our Prime Minister-to-be seemingly could not care less. Whatever Sir Keir’s many achievements, I will never forget the character of the man who followed me on Twitter, sat back and watched my world burn.
The Secret Barrister 🦋@BarristerSecret

It’s not just Labour Reddit that’s on the case. Some folks with a righteous “UK law”/Union flag/gavel motif are now predicting “a pretty big scandal when it comes out” that Keir Starmer is The Secret Barrister.

Shocked and disappointed by the hustings yesterday. Service should be above political point scoring. My time as Royal Marines Commando is a privilege of a lifetime. It would be an honour to serve Plymouth in Parliament, as I served our nation before. plymouthherald.co.uk/news/plymouth-…

BREAKING Best foot forward: Brits urged to wear flip-flops or sandals for Euro passport checks from Oct 2024. When the Entry Exit System begins, UK travellers to the EU will have to give toe prints + facial biometrics. Aim is to swerve legal cases over right to take fingerprints.

2019: Theresa May, "After Brexit our environmental standards will not fall" 2024: Oxford rower Leonard Jenkins, "A few guys got e.coli.. I was throwing up this morning.. It would have been ideal not to have so much poo in the water" World famous #TheBoatRace2024 @theboatrace between Oxford and Cambridge affected by raw sewage dumped into the River Thames after the Conservative party promised our environmental standards would not fall after Brexit. Yet it has been the Conservative party who have repeatedly voted to allow water companies to continue to dump raw sewage in our rivers and seas - shame on them, and on anyone who continues to vote for them
