We have bombed a nation we are not at war with and have done so without Congress knowing about it, voting on it or approving it. President Trump’s actions are not only unconstitutional—they are dangerous. As Ranking Member of the Military Personnel Subcommittee I am especially concerned for our service members, their families and other Americans who are in the region and request an immediate briefing on the full details. The Trump administration must brief Congress immediately and fully on this action and the Americans currently in the region who are at risk, and must also come before Congress as required before taking any further action.

It is illegal for Donald Trump to drag America into another endless foreign war. Congress should immediately pass a War Powers Resolution to block Trump from carrying out an unconstitutional war. My entire adult life, politicians have promised that new wars in the Middle East would be quick and easy. Then they sent other people’s children to fight and die endlessly. Enough.

I am gravely alarmed by the use of force by the United States against Iran today. This is a dangerous escalation in a region already on the edge – and a direct threat to international peace and security.   There is a growing risk that this conflict could rapidly get out of control – with catastrophic consequences for civilians, the region, and the world.   I call on Member States to de-escalate and to uphold their obligations under the @UN Charter and other rules of international law.   At this perilous hour, it is critical to avoid a spiral of chaos.   There is no military solution.  The only path forward is diplomacy.  The only hope is peace.
