@dexpolley @nigstnguemyanus @TheOmniLiberal just because you ask doesn't mean i have to comply. the manner in which you asked was antagonistic which does not lend to getting people to do what you want. is there a rule where i have to state how i think anything works? eesh.
English

@Nsight4sight @nigstnguemyanus @TheOmniLiberal You were never interested in learning. I didnt ask you to conceid i asked you to contribute. Not once in this conversation have you stated how you think anything works.
English

@dexpolley @nigstnguemyanus @TheOmniLiberal you have been antagonistic in your responses from the get go for no good reason. i'm just not interested in what you're selling.
English

@Nsight4sight @nigstnguemyanus @TheOmniLiberal The thing is, you will walk away from this conversation having learned nothing. A few people put effort into detailing economic factors that addressed your "question". What is your conclusion on the effect of blanket tarrifs? Are they bringing prices down?
English

@Nsight4sight @nigstnguemyanus @TheOmniLiberal That its dumb to think tarrifs would lower the costs of anything.
English

@nigstnguemyanus @dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal cool, and as i said, if you don't know any examples that's fine. what else is there to say about it?
English

@Nsight4sight @dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal I explained to you why they wouldn't have that effect even if you think they could. They aren't meant to either. You use tariffs to make sure that those companies can survive at all, DESPITE it being worse for the end consumer. They work against normal market mechanisms.
English

@nigstnguemyanus @dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal i imagine you realize that counterintuitives and exceptions exist in the world, right? you've already sort of acknowledged how tariffs could have an effect at lowering costs. i want to know more about those types of situations and if it's ever worked. if you don't know any, fine.
English

@Nsight4sight @dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal And that is because producing them locally is simply more expensive. The manufacturer is not going to magically reduce those costs just because you handicapped their competitors. In fact, it will let them increase prices, if anything.
English

@nigstnguemyanus @dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal can't understand that a flawed analogy leads to flawed thinking, sub 50 IQ confirmed.
English

@nigstnguemyanus @dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal because economies are exactly like backyards. Very Smart.
English

@Nsight4sight @dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal "Has a fence ever made been effective in modifying the backyard in a way that it is easier to walk into?"
English

@strajk_ @TheOmniLiberal Others have given more thoughtful responses and it looks like the answer isn't just simply "no". Just curious. It's a good indicator of the health of a community how it treats curiosity.
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal No.
There, I answered directly what many before me failed to do so.
Now I ask you, any reason why you ask this? You got an example proving otherwise or was it just genuine curiosity?
>inb4 no reply
English

@badger_top @TheOmniLiberal cool but there are exceptions to everything and that's what i was curious about
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal The entire point of tariffs is to increase the price to encourage the purchase of locally produced goods instead.
English

@WHE_Reborn @TheOmniLiberal Why an all encompassing theory for all actions instead of one for tariffs? I appreciate the talks but like I said, this kind of talk just comes off lazy to me. I have psych background and when people start applying diagnosis to people not in their care I am immediately suspicious
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal The psychological predictions as jarring as they are were that Trump was fixated on getting a Nobel peace prize, liked and deeply respected Putin on a personal level, disliked Zelenksy, and that as a result he would continue pressuring Ukraine and never reach an agreement.
English

@WHE_Reborn @TheOmniLiberal i don't buy the theory driving his actions are that vacuous. i'm more curious about steel manning this stuff as i find "trump dum" explanations lazy.
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal No. He's tariffing everything from every country on earth including allies. He just thinks it's a magical "fix everything" button.
English

@WHE_Reborn @TheOmniLiberal good example. is there an interpretation similar to this that might justify some or all of the trump tariffs? also, i haven't heard much about what effect those tariffs have had on the economy despite the widespread worry at the time it would be devastating to our economy.
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal In this example explosives will become more expensive *but* in a war with china where they stop trading you won't find yourself suddenly without any explosives to build munitions with.
English

@WHE_Reborn @TheOmniLiberal have there been situations where at least some economists believe it was a valid, justifiable action to implement tariffs?
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal In any scenario where the tariff actually taxes a sizeable amount of imports it will raise the price. You can justify it if you think it's worth the higher price to protect local manufacturing but it will prevent your economy from moving up the value added chain.
English

@WHE_Reborn @TheOmniLiberal i am curious about the exceptions, hence my question. i am also wondering if there are situations where implementation of a tariff has a beneficial effect beyond just prices for end customers.
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal It almost always does. You could find exceptions in areas where your domestic production already totally dominates all foreign imports but in those fields there's no need to apply tariffs as the purpose is to protect domestic industry that's being harmed by foreign imports.
English

@dexpolley @TheOmniLiberal i'm sure it makes you feel Very Smart to answer in this way yet it's not what i'm asking. have tariffs ever been effective in modifying price in a way that is cheaper for the end customer?
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal I mean it does. By definition, a tarrif makes an imported good more expensive. The reason you would impose a tarrif is to make imported goods more expensive.
English

@Nsight4sight @TheOmniLiberal A tarrifs purpose is to make imports more expensive thats the goal of a tarrif. when it gets here the american company that ordered the good has to pay the US government a tarrif tax.
English

EAT SHIT @ADL @TheIHRA @WhiteHouse
61% of America Jews stand with majority of Americans who say Israel is committing war crimes against Palestinians.
You called us Antisemitic & lied by saying 99% of Jews support Israel’s war (crimes) against Palestinians.
English

Born and raised in Italy, catholic schools, catholic university… never seen this thing. Not even the pope. Whatever Americans touch becomes a circus.
