When did the takeover of Township Spazas really begin? Looking back now, it feels like it happened slowly over the years while many of us were not paying attention. I only truly started noticing the seriousness of the situation after the tragic deaths of children who consumed poisoned snacks and noodles bought from some of these shops. I think the noodles case was in the EC.
The issue goes beyond just the shop owners themselves. There are also people enabling the situation by renting out spaces without proper checks, while authorities failed to enforce regulations and protect communities.
We are angry because children lost their lives, and people want accountability, safer trading environments, proper law enforcement, and stronger food safety controls in our townships.

Were similar engagements held with South African informal sector associations operating within our townships? If so, which organisations were consulted, and what criteria were used in selecting stakeholders for these discussions?
Given the importance of the informal sector to local communities and livelihoods, transparency and equal representation are essential. I know of @MxolisButhelezi who is big on Town Retail economy, were you ever visited or supported in any shape or form?

#sapsHQ [INTERPOL SA TRACES AND ARRESTS USA FATHER WANTED FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT OF MINOR DAUGHTER] A 56-year-old wanted fugitive was arrested on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, at his home in Kabega Park, Gqeberha for the alleged sexual abuse of his daughter. The suspect, a USA citizen, is wanted by INTERPOL on charges of rape and sexual assault reported by the victim’s mother to the San Antonio Police Department in 2017. According to a report, the suspect allegedly raped his daughter and shared explicit text messages with her over a period; the victim was 12 years old at the time. Upon completion of the investigation, the suspect had fled the United States of America and was later traced to Eastern Cape, South Africa.
