The IAEA has been informed by Iran that the Natanz nuclear site was attacked today. No increase in off-site radiation levels reported. IAEA is looking into the report. IAEA Director General @rafaelmgrossi reiterates call for military restraint to avoid any risk of a nuclear accident.

Hardly any senators showed up to this #nuclear power hearing today. Guess interest is quickly waning.

Is the timer at this Senate hearing on #nuclear power not working? The Republicans are just rambling endlessly, hardly even asking the witnesses anything. Sen. Daines is raving about coal at the moment.

It sounds like @ENERGY and #nuclear plants that use TRISO fuel are headed on a collision course. If US policy is now to reprocess all spent fuel, that conflicts with the fact that TRISO reprocessing would be an even bigger, more expensive headache than LWR fuel reprocessing.

Theodore Garrish, Assistant Secretary for @GovNuclear, said that there were #nuclear fuel fabrication issues with two of the reactor pilot projects. No kidding. These issues probably mean that the fuel doesn't actually exist.

John Wagner, director of Idaho National Lab, is asking Congress to expand @ENERGY authority to license #nuclear power reactors. Which is, I believe, an admission that the current Reactor Pilot Program is likely illegal. energy.senate.gov/services/files…

On Saturday the emergency operations facility for the Beaver Valley #nuclear plant in #Pennsylvania went completely dark after offsite power was lost due to a weather-related outage and the backup generator failed to work. It's not clear if power has been restored yet.

NRC says it doesn't regulate chemical exposures. True enough. But perhaps this is an indication of poor safety culture that could also affect radiological safety?

While the @NRCgov is busy praising itself this morning, here's a reminder that #nuclear plants are industrial facilities with both chemical and radiological hazards. Also, a degradation of the reactor vessel head was just detected at Byron-1 and will require repair.

Reports from Reddit indicate this was a hydrazine leak, which was my first guess. Something like 18 people affected.
