With the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct coming soon, I thought I'd do some research over the last couple weeks and post some fun, Grok assisted predictions and macro analysis of what we might see on April 2nd. Let's dive in!
Probably the most important question everyone would like to know, is when will the Switch 2 release? I compiled loads of data (past releases, time between announcements and previous releases, etc.) to help me figure it out. Grok initially came up with the likeliest date of June 27, 2025 when asked to give an estimate. This felt early, leaving only twelve weeks after the Direct for preparation. Although Grok 3 seems to be a massive improvement, I considered one factor that it did not, which is the “Nintendo curse.” For those unaware of this phenomenon, I'm referring to the fact that every other console released in recent history by Nintendo has been a commercial disappointment. What's more after bringing the “curse” to Grok's attention, it analyzed the historical data and admitted this was an important oversight. All in all, due to past shortages and scalping dilemmas, I estimate Nintendo will want to overprepare, so to say. I believe that Friday, July 18th is the most likely contender.
The other big unknown, of course, are technical specs for the Switch 2. I won't post my complete macro analysis here for ease of reading, but if anybody is curious about my Grok strategy you can always reply and ask, or message me!
As many gamers are likely aware, due to affordability concerns and mass production required for hardware of this caliber it isn't really practical to use cutting-edge chips, so I looked at data about the original Switch to help inform my prediction. The Switch 2 will very likely include a variation of T239 Tegra. With a 12gb video memory Ampere gpu onboard, this would put the new system at approximately 1.2 to 1.4 TFLOPS in handheld mode. Compared to the original Switch clocking in at around 157 GFLOPS, this is a possible ~9x improvement! I believe Nintendo will hold off on 5nm process, for now, possibly for a Switch 2 Pro version down the line. I like to temper expectations, so all said I'll go with an 8-core 8nm T239 pushing 1.3TFLOPS in handheld mode, 2.6TFLOPS docked with 60fps, 2k DLSS upscaling technology. Mark it!
Other factors that are interesting to consider are ssd size and battery specs. My main focus was on the other two issues, so I'll just take some educated guesses here based on prior research and what Grok predicts. I believe for the internal memory, we'll see a 256gb and expansion slot upgrade, that is, if Nintendo learned anything from Steam deck missteps. Battery life will depend on system load, so I'll just estimate that Nintendo will use a cost-effective battery somewhere in the 5,000mAh range, just about 20% better than the original and rely heavily on game optimization. Mark it!
The Nintendo Switch 2 is sure to make waves. Whether it's a tsunami of success, or a wash out and belly flop, only time will tell. I'm optimistic that Nintendo can balance being cost-effective with impressive technological leaps for a handheld device. All said, I believe the Switch 2 will be a solid new hybrid console option in the $399 range, with Mario Kart 9 as the flagship release title on July 18, 2025! Wahoo!
