@elonmusk Building an "everything app" , has so many businesss and architectural requirements that have to be done right (having written hundreds of detailed arch pages on it). And until those are realized, putting code devs on it would be the ultimate feature creep & tech debt.

@mohammedzero43 @gamefromscratch @o3dengine It is a bit smaller. Github clone (w/LFS): 5GB Downloaded Deps: 2GB or using the O3DE binary Installer size: 8GB The rest is generated locally and depends on what you enable/use. Completely rewritten renderer, detangled deps, modular subsystems, growing, and a lot of support.

ATM, I am playing around with the #multiplayer sample scene. will try and get it scaled out to see how far it can be taken :D @o3dengine is all ECS so target for this week is ~1k moving entities over the wire. Next week, I'll try for 1 k players :D #gamedev

@ID_AA_Carmack @MissQuickstep @InsightfulVR This was the main reason we went monolithic. There was little benefit to adding a level of complexity. We wanted to focus on speed of adoption. If in the future there is a desire to change, the community will help drive in that direction.

@MissQuickstep @InsightfulVR Monolithic codebases get things done. I am aware of the arguments and tradeoffs, but I believe that, in general, developers reach for distributed codebases and runtimes far more often than is beneficial. You may regret your decision.

O3DE looks like a GREAT THING for the industry! OTOH, while being "modular" it looks like it's a monolithic git repository. It would have been nice to see the code distributed across multiple repositories via a built-in "package manager" (We built @InsightfulVR's engine this way)

I always found it curious how so much of game development outside of low level systems seemed fairly hostile to the ideals of open source. There is some aspect of business reality, and some aspect of artistic ownership, but there is something else going on culturally as well. \
