Listen to the emotion, not just the words.
There's two conversations happening within a person. Which one are you listening to?
There's the talk track and there's the emotional track. Listen to the words, but let them fall away.
Work to understand the emotional experience that's happening or happened.
If you can get both lined up, you've really got an understanding.

Most adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s still can’t handle frustration, disappointment, or sadness any better than they could as toddlers — except now the stakes are massively higher.
Dr. Becky Kennedy said this on Lewis Howes’ podcast and it hit hard. Real resilience isn’t avoiding tough emotions. It’s getting better at sitting with them.
A brain surgeon with 1,000+ operations told Lewis Howes directly: the #1 skill every human needs is emotional regulation.
Science backs this — research shows strong emotional regulation is one of the best predictors of long-term mental health, better relationships, and even physical health outcomes.
In a world full of distractions and quick escapes, this might be the most important skill we’re not teaching.
This one made me pause. I’ve definitely avoided hard feelings more than I’d like to admit. Getting better at sitting with them has quietly improved almost everything.
How well do you handle uncomfortable emotions — sit with them or try to escape?

My dad was a Sr. IT Director when he retired from corporate America.
One of the main things he taught me:
Build your network before you need it.
Every day it seems there's another company posting record revenue, and despite that, laying off employees.
I'm living proof of how important this is.
Although I never really thought about leaving, I still emphasized building my network even though I was with the same company for a decade.
When I was laid off a month after my dad died, I took 2 months off my job search.
I didn't even apply anywhere.
When I was ready, I just made a few phone calls, they made the right intros, and the rest is history.

I used to hate #networking. The thought of walking into a room of strangers felt exhausting, awkward, & paralysis by analysis got me every time. Now I teach people how to #networksmarter to help them learn what I did to push past fear & connect with confidence. DM me for info.

Ten years ago, I published Grit. In those pages, I wrote down everything I’d discovered about world-class achievers and how passion and perseverance set them apart.
Since then I’ve been studying the situations that make world-class achievement possible.
My research shows that the situation shapes you—but you have the power to shape it first. How?
1. Set up your personal space.
2. Pick your peers.
3. Attract mentors.
4. Choose your culture.
Getting situated means finding the people and places that bring out your best.
Grit is great, but to realize your potential, you also need to get situated.
Pre-order Situated. Out September 1st.
