In this #HeritageHighlight, we go back to the early 20th century to glimpse construction of OPG's Sir Adam Beck I Generating Station (GS) in Niagara Falls, considered the world's first true hydro mega-project. Originally named the Queenston-Chippawa Hydroelectric Plant, it took about 10,000 workers and five years to build the 10-unit, 410-megawatt facility. During construction, workers faced immense challenges and obstacles, including the arrival of the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918. But they persevered to build a station that continues to serve Ontario reliably more than 100 years after it first went into service in 1922. Today, OPG is investing in Beck I's future, with a plan to refurbish three units at the historic station, along with 16 units at its neighbour, the Sir Adam Beck II GS. This work will ensure these hydro crown jewels can keep powering Ontario for many more decades to come. Learn more: bit.ly/3QOFCFe #HeritageHighlight #CleanEnergy #HydroPower

Ahead of International Drone Day on Saturday, we celebrate the great and valuable work of OPG’s very own drone team. Part of our Advanced Inspection and Maintenance division, these highly trained pilots and operators put advanced drone tech to work across the province - capturing the views (and the data) that help keep our operations running smoothly. From flights inside hard-to-reach hydro penstocks to up-close captures of a nuclear reactor face to bird’s-eye views of the G7’s first SMR build, OPG’s drone team provides detailed footage, information, and data we simply wouldn’t be able to get any other way. This team is redefining inspections at OPG - delivering better data, faster, and with safety front and center.

Last week, we lowered the close to 2,100,000-pound Basemat into place — the foundation for the G7's first Small Modular Reactor and Canada's first new nuclear build in more than 30 years. One of the largest crawler cranes in the world lowered the Basemat module into the reactor shaft at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site — 35 metres below ground. It’s the first time in Canada a foundation for a reactor building was assembled modularly – putting the “M” in SMR – as the giant component was fabricated, welded, and put together in one piece before being lifted into place. This was a milestone months in the making, requiring significant attention to detail and safety, as well as the hard work of dedicated trades and project partners. Piece by piece, we're continuing to build one of the largest and most complex clean energy projects in Canada today. Learn more: bit.ly/4mSWI0w

From the office to the powerhouse, Sam Amin has charted a unique path to hydro. With a passion for renewable energy, Sam knew she wanted to work in hydro and would do anything to get there. She got her foot in the door as a receptionist at our office in Toronto before making the leap into the general trades. Trading a desk role for the field, she quickly learned the ropes with a stint in OPG's North Bay work centre. Today, she's a hydro operating technician in the Eastern Operations Control Room at R.H. Saunders, where she helps manage the safe, reliable power production from 10 hydro stations. "This has definitely been a dream fulfilled," she says. Learn more about Sam's journey: bit.ly/4eKLnxp

Today, we pause to recognize the National Day of Mourning in honour of those who have lost their lives or were injured in the workplace. We stand together with our union and contractor partners to commemorate this solemn day by renewing our commitment to create a safer workplace. Working safely isn't just something we say. At OPG, it's our number one priority - a part of our DNA, our culture, and something we instill across our operations and projects. Today, we honour those workers who didn't make it home and recommit to ensuring a safe workplace for all.

In Niagara, OPG's historic Sir Adam Beck I station just received a big delivery - a new runner and shaft assembly for the station's G4 unit refurbishment. To prepare for its installation, workers also completed tilting the 94,000-pound piece into a vertical position. This runner, which helps convert the energy of flowing water into electricity, is the first major component to arrive for G4's unit refurbishment. And it's the first of many new runners to come as we prepare to renew 19 units in total across Beck I and II stations, which, combined, power more than 1.5 million homes. Learn more: bit.ly/4cnWE5r

This #EarthDay, we're celebrating a major environmental achievement for Ontario. Since 2000, OPG and its partners have planted more than 10 million trees and shrubs across Ontario — setting deep roots for a sustainable future and building a living legacy. Increasing tree cover is one of the most effective tools to address climate change as trees capture and store carbon, produce oxygen, offer essential habitat and cooling shade for wildlife, and play a meaningful role in reducing climate change impacts. Thank you to the over 30 tree-planting partners who have placed shovels in the ground over the years to reach this milestone! Learn more: bit.ly/4tX5GMv

As the weather warms up, always remember to stay clear, stay safe around dams, rivers, and waterways. Across Ontario, spring rainfall, warm temperatures, and rapid snowmelt have resulted in higher-than-normal water flows in numerous watersheds. Slippery banks and fast-flowing cold water can create hazardous conditions around all bodies of water. To stay safe, stay away from fast-moving rivers and streams and maintain a safe distance from OPG facilities.

Abitibi Canyon Generating Station is a sight to behold and remains one of the tallest dams in the province - 45-meters to be exact. Recently, one of OPG's project teams received an international award for their concrete rehabilitation work on the downstream face of Abitibi's dam. One of the innovations deployed was dry-mix shotcrete, a faster, more efficient application of concrete compared with conventional formed-and-poured repairs. The effort was recognized with the Project of the Year award from the American Shotcrete Association. As part of a larger concrete rehab project at Abitibi Canyon, this work ensures that Abitibi Canyon can continue safely and reliably providing power to about 350,000 homes - building on a legacy of service spanning 90 years.
