It depended on your parents.
If you were religious (and thus had kids early) or if your parents told you buy, you may have done it, but for the rest of us, the idea of buying a house in 2018 was out of the question.
Not only were we not told to, in the wake of the 2008 real estate crisis, we were bombarded with “never grow up” propaganda.
“Don’t have kids”
“Don’t start a family”
Stuff like that.
It wasn’t until I was 31 that I realized that I had to get married because my girlfriend-at-the-time had a closing fertility window.
I’m big into personal responsibility, but if all you hear is “kids will ruin your life” and “enjoy your youth”, it’s hard to rise above the messaging and make a decision that is contrarian and will be mocked by your peers, that is:
To move into a low cost middle America suburb with your wife to start having kids.

As a millennial... this is BS. Most millennials are around mid 30s - 40s. You easily could've bought a nice 2500 sq ft house in the suburbs for 220k in 2018 But you didn't. You didn't prioritize building roots, building a family... And now that you're 35, 39, 42... you're upset that 220k house is now 420k and you're mad at everyone else. You gambled and you lost.

I used to live in Salt Lake. The entire valley has been overrun by Venezuelans and Guatemalans. The Walmarts are staffed by Afghans and Somalis who barely speak English.
