A large-scale search operation is in progress to find G.S Saranya (36), an IT professional from Eyyankode in Nadapuram, Kozhikode who went missing during a trek in the forests of Madikeri in Coorg. Saranya had entered the forest on April 2 to trek to Tadiandamol, Coorg's highest peak. Around 60 personnel from the police and forest department are involved in the search in the Betta forest area. The anti-Naxal force has also joined the operation. Saranya, who works for an IT firm in Kochi had reportedly booked the trek online and travelled alone. Forest officials had earlier warned her that solo trekking was not allowed because of the presence of wild elephants in the area. She then stayed at a homestay in Yavakapadi and later joined a group of 10 trekkers on Thursday morning. According to homestay staff, Saranya sent a message around 2 pm saying that she had lost her way in the forest. Police were informed immediately, and teams from the Karnataka Forest Department and police launched a search but she has not yet been located. Reports suggest she went missing in an area known for frequent wild elephant movement. Forest Deputy Conservator Abhishek said Saranyas mobile phone is currently switched off, making it difficult for search teams to track her location. Police officials noted that trekkers who lose their way usually manage to return to the trail within a few hours. The rest of the trekking group returned safely by Thursday evening. Saranya is the daughter of Gopi Vadakkayil, a retired employee of the Vadakara Taluk Agricultural Development Bank and Shailaja. Her brother Shyam, an engineer based in Bengaluru has also reached Kodagu to support the ongoing search.
