I can’t imagine myself belonging to the same religion as people who proudly identify with the legacy of Usman dan Fodio, a man whose jihad brought war, bloodshed and conquest. In 2022, Deborah Samuel was accused of blasphemy in Sokoto, and religious fanatics swung into action. The school authorities tried to save her. They hid her inside the school security office and called a taxi to take her away. All she needed was to make it from that office into the taxi. She never made it. The mob dragged her out, beat her, stoned her to death and set her body on fire. Why? Because she was accused of insulting an Arabian caravan raider who died over 1,400 years ago. They claim they are protecting his image, but every act of violence committed in his defence damages that image even further. When people behave like this over criticism of a religious figure, what exactly separates such fanaticism from the behaviour of a violent cult? A religion that needs mobs, stones and fire to defend its prophet has already exposed its weakness.
