@jayhemz “Senior developer” but you want to monitor them like boarding school students in Uyo? Lmaooo 😭 At some point, employers need to understand that underpaying talent is expensive too because the cost will always show up one way or another.

Nigerian Employers, especially those with diasporan experience, please nau. A few days ago, someone reached out that he wanted to set up a team in Nigeria to build out a solution. We got talking and he mentioned he had a budget of #4.5m per senior developer. This was subsequently revised to #3m per developer. Drafted the proposal that included sourcing all through handoff with a 7% commission over 3 months. This brother got back to ask whether we can revise salaries to #1.2m because in his words, "I spoke with a partner who is the Founder of Xyz, and he said 1.2m will fly for the role." This was someone who told me he wanted SENIOR Developers. I told him 1.2m won't fly and if that's his budget, he better source for them himself. But that's not the real catch. This Oga said he wanted to relocate these Senior Devs to Uyo, all expense paid for the course of 3 months. I told him that's a weird thing to pitch to a Senior. A competent senior developer should be able to work remotely. He claimed he had been burned before so he wants the Devs in person in an environment of his choosing. There and then, I called it quits. I sent our chat to a mentor and this was his reply in the screenshot below😂 If you're paranoid about hiring Senior Devs, you shouldn't be in the market looking for Senior Devs. Also, please if you don't have the budget, don't come to my DM. I only work based on referrals. I don't even talk about my clients, but I value my reputation. Regardless of what's in it for me, I won't put any Dev under me in harm's way. Please let's know what we are doing ndi Employers of Labour.

I sat with a couple yesterday for a private session. The husband looked me dead in the eye and said, 'Mimi, I don't think I can do this anymore. My wife has started earning more than me, and suddenly, she has a voice in this house.' I asked her what she thought. She spoke softly and respectfully, 'I just want to help with the bills so we can move to a better neighborhood.' The husband slammed the table. 'Who asked you for help? I am the head. If you have extra money, give it to me to manage. You cannot be "helping" and then telling me what time we should eat dinner.' She responded, but dinner is by 6pm, what is my crime? I haven't stopped you from eating anytime you want. I looked at him and asked, 'Is it the money you're afraid of, or the fact that she’s no longer "under" you?' He told me I’m too young to understand how African homes work. I looked at him and said stop being selfish, I am also a married woman. She is only supporting you, not disrespecting. I just sighed. Since when did a wife’s success become a husband’s threat? 🤦‍♀️

Another BS we need to correct and nip in the bud is this talking point of "financial inclusion". Who are you including if >70% of your target customers don't even have access to internet, yet, internet is the primary way of using your app? Please study actual startups like Momo who are including actual unincluded folks. It's some of these lies that give unfounded expectations. What we have are "faster payment times", "faster reconciliations", etc. You're not including anybody that wasn't already privy to the system.

Since the days of Paystack, it's almost impossible to see employee loyalty in a tech startup that is ORGANIC. Let nobody deceive you. Employee loyalty is based on: 1. Clear structure (clear role definitions/expectations). 2. Pay (leave plenty talk on meatpie, pizza, and company events, let your alert match your motivational talks). 3. Growth. (promote people that are promoting your company revenue and otherwise). But now, all you see is PR. It's Omojuwa that's posting your picture, talking about "shining light" in big 2026. 😭😭

Are there good startups? Yes! But let’s stop pretending this isn’t a widespread problem. If employees can’t speak freely without fear, and the only loud defenders are fellow founders or desperate job seekers… That already tells you a lot.

Boundaries in these organizations are almost a joke. Work-life balance? You’re not passionate. Push back? You’re not a team player. And the wild part is, this has been normalized. Employees are burning out quietly while the brand is busy tweeting on the TL.

There’s a reason you rarely hear honest experiences from people actually working inside Nigerian startups. It’s always founders backing founders. Where are the actual employees? Nigerian startups can be one of the most toxic places to work.
