To celebrate Tom Krummel's retirement from Stanford, we gathered for an evening of #storytelling. Tom is continuing as a senior advisor for Biodesign and board chair @FogartyInnov so we're not sure this counts as retirement but we miss you already TK! #healthtech #innovation

@bijans Feels like disparaging your institution and boss should be highly problematic even if he only used personal time/equipment

@bradloncar @gillie144 Regardless whether Baxter counts or not, that was tied to their Baxalta spinoff. Not a “true” stock split

@gillie144 Ok partial credit. Not sure if Baxter counts as biotech.

Since today is the day $AAPL and $TSLA start trading post-split, here’s a trivia question for biotwitter: What was the last biotech company to split its stock?

Whoa, 147 (36%) out of 408 people tested positive for the #coronavirus at a large homeless shelter in Boston medrxiv.org/content/10.110… More interestingly, only ~1/6 showed symptoms among those tested positive, i.e. 1:5 for symptomatic vs asymptomatic. #COVID19

@ScottGottliebMD Ideally, we could also conduct a serology test on the ~85% who tested negative to see what percent of those patients previously had the virus. That would give us the true total exposure rate

More data on the #COVID19 attack rate in New York. Doctors screened all expectant moms at one NY hospital and found 29/210 (13.8%) were asymptomatic and positive. Exposure in New York to covid could be very high given emerging data on scope of prevalence nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

@bradloncar Interesting but will still need the RCTs to have any sense of real efficacy. What has been observed mortality of ventilated patients in major hot spots? If ~50%, then could be some effect here. Need more data

A cohort of patients with severe Covid-19 received treatment with remdesivir under a compassionate-use protocol. Improvement in oxygen-support status was observed in 68% of patients, and overall mortality was 13% over a median follow-up of 26 days. #COVID19

@Farzad_MD How much can we really read into new case growth and positivity rate given lack of tests available? Especially with guidance in NYC to only test where it will change clinical management?

3/ OK, here's something worrisome (as if we needed it) If you look at the new cases reported since yesterday's update, there were 5k new cases reported from NY, and 12k new tests, for a 42% positive rate. That is astonishing, and suggests that the outbreak hasn't peaked yet

1/ New York and New Jersey have the highest rates of #COVID19 tests turning out positive in the country. Can you guess which state has the next highest percent positive testing? We wrote about why that matters here: statnews.com/2020/03/24/we-…

@ASlavitt Wouldn’t it be sufficient to get R0 below 1? Is R0=0 even achievable?

Right now the smartest people I talk to want us to push R0 to zero, and be able to contract trace, install thermal indicators, reliable anti-body testing, and out fever tents in the right place. Armchair experts and economic hacks feel different.27/

Senators on at least some committees have been briefed that the COVID-19 death toll is expected to be between 1.7 million and 2.2 million. The biggest reason I will cover now. /16
