Dutch Van Der Linde’s Ending in RDR1 With RDR2’s context, this has become one of the best scenes in the entire Red Dead franchise, “We gotta stop meeting like this” as John and Dutch are facing each other one last time on top of a snowy mountain, guns pointed just like the end of RDR2. Dutch uttering “I have a plan” one last time and then proceeding to say the same speech he makes in RDR2 when he was escaping the army with Arthur, for his last speech, he is thinking of him. Only this time his son is not with his side, his son is the one pointing the gun, and there’s no escape. Dutch had rehearsed this speech just like he had rehearsed all his speeches in the past, yet he still manages to say some things that are genuine “when im gone they’ll just find another monster” strongly signifying to John that the Pinkertons will go after him yet Marston is so convinced that forgiveness is something he can earn, that he doesn’t seem to take this much into account. Dutch seemingly lives in a cave in Cochinay as well, “It isn’t like Dutch to just hide in a cave somewhere” is something Arthur says in RDR2 in Chapter 2, How little he really knew him. Dutch’s last words are “Our time is passed, John.” I truly believe Dutch’s death is the ultimate end to the Wild West in the Red Dead world, the last standing part of the many gangs that reigned over the Wild West like the O’Driscolls and many before, Someone who thought if you killed enough people you could change the world, Now reduced to a man cornered in a cave and ending his life by himself, with no family left.
