Staying a private company allows you to keep people that actually care about the brand as controlling interests. Going public gives power to people that see the brand as nothing but a cash cow to milk or business to grow into a vehicle that acquires more businesses, more mass.

The large issue with companies is they start seeing themselves as a "business" rather than seeing themselves as their brand. That is how the companies ruin themselves so willingly. Because its good business (on paper) but terrible for their brand, which they have become blind to.
