“This is untenable! The whole purpose of the Integrity Commission Act is thwarted and undermined by the suppression of this report. The people, this parliament and the media have a right to see the report and it must be tabled immediately!”

I am horrified by the deadly attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego, an apparent act of anti-Muslim violence. Islamophobia endangers Muslim communities across this country. We must confront it directly and stand together against the politics of fear and division. My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the entire community grieving this devastating attack. The NYPD is increasing deployments to mosques across the city out of an abundance of caution. There are currently no known threats to NYC houses of worship.

In the richest city in the richest country in the history of the world, nobody should be going hungry. That's why we're opening five city-owned grocery stores, one in each borough, starting with The Bronx. Lower Prices. Good food. Publicly owned. Hunts Point next year. Every borough by 2029.

Happy Mother's Day to every mother and mother figure who makes it happen every single day. You are the power source that runs Jamaica, in your home, in your community, in this nation. To every woman who steps in and plays that role , you are seen, you are appreciated, and today is yours. Have a wonderful day. You deserve it.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling guts the Voting Rights Act and turns back the clock on the foundational promise of equality and fairness in our election systems. Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act was one of the last remaining federal protections for Black and brown voters against maps deliberately drawn to dilute their political power. That protection has been stripped away. It is an outrage. But it is not a surprise. It is part of an agenda that conservatives set in place decades ago to steal power from everyday people and then cling to that power for generations. The court’s decision is motivated by politics and designed to give an upper hand to Donald Trump’s Republican Party, which faces the threat of losing the upcoming midterm elections. We must pay attention to what happens next. The fight now returns to the states. Legislatures — particularly those in the South — will rush to redraw districts before voting for the midterms begins in just a few months. Already, Louisiana and Florida are planning to redraw their maps, and we should not be surprised if others rapidly follow suit ahead of the midterms and 2028. Their politically-motivated power grab is meant to protect elected Republicans from any consequences for their failure to make groceries, gas, health care, or housing more affordable for you and your family. They want to cheat and choose their voters, instead of the voters deciding who they choose. The mission before us is to restore the power of the people. There is no question our fight became harder today, but I know we are up for the battle.

Today, President Barack Obama and I read to a group of toddlers at Learning Through Play Pre-K Center in the South Bronx. In between singing wheels on the bus, we discussed our administration’s vision for this City — one where New York’s Cutest have the strongest start possible.

DR. ALFRED DAWES DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY AFTER CORNWALL REGIONAL HOSPITAL TRAGEDY Shadow Minister for Health calls out Minister Tufton's culture of deflection as systemic failures claim infant life Montego Bay, Jamaica. April 9, 2026. Dr. Alfred Dawes, Shadow Minister for Health and Wellness, today issued a forceful call for an immediate, independent inquiry into the death of baby Ramontay Rakai Ranger at Cornwall Regional Hospital on Good Friday and squarely placed responsibility at the feet of Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton. "This tragedy is the direct consequence of nine years of neglect and a culture of no accountability from Minister Tufton," said Dr. Dawes. "His consistent pattern of denying involvement and deflecting blame must end. The unfinished corridors of Cornwall Regional Hospital are monuments to this Government's failed leadership. Jamaica deserves action not another PR moment." Dr. Dawes expressed profound sorrow for Shandale Ballentine, the 33-year-old first-time mother who left Cornwall Regional Hospital on what should have been the most joyful day of her life, instead returning home without her child. "No mother should ever suffer what Ms. Ballentine has endured. And no Jamaican should suffer because a minister refuses to lead," he said. The Shadow Minister was unsparing in his assessment of Minister Tufton's public response, characterising it as a calculated exercise in evasion. Promising an investigation while offering no acceptance of ministerial responsibility, Dr. Tufton has once again retreated behind process rather than demonstrating leadership. It is a pattern Dr. Dawes says, it is not only familiar, it is dangerous. The numbers tell a damning story. Cornwall Regional Hospital's long-overdue renovation has ballooned from an initial $2 billion to more than $23.5 billion with no completed facility to show for it. Nearly a decade of delays, cost overruns and mismanagement have left one of Jamaica's most critical health institutions structurally compromised. Dr. Dawes argues that the death of baby Ramontay is not an isolated incident, but an inevitable consequence of sustained institutional failure under this administration. "Minister Tufton has been at the helm of Jamaica's health system for a decade" said Dr. Dawes. "He cannot separate himself from its failures. Accountability is not optional for those who seek power; it is the price of leadership." Dr. Dawes is calling for a transparent, independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding baby Ramontay's death and a full audit of systemic failures within the Western Regional Health Authority. He has pledged to pursue this matter in Parliament and through every available avenue until answers and accountability are delivered to the Jamaican people. The People's National Party stands firmly behind Dr. Dawes in this demand. As the nation mourns alongside Ms. Ballentine, the Opposition will not allow this tragedy to be managed, minimised, or forgotten.
