Kisumu Port, East Africa’s largest inland waterway port is undergoing a major expansion as KPA is angling to boost the port’s cargo handling capacity and strengthen regional transport links. 🔧 Key upgrades being undertaken include ✔ Quay extension: 262m → 392m → more vessels can dock simultaneously ✔ Yard expansion beyond 3,000 sqm ✔ New warehouse underway ✔ Drainage repairs The Authority is also investing in intermodal links, with a new access road to ease truck traffic and a Meter-gauge rail being laid to connect to the linkspan and enhance cargo transfer. Long-term plans include linking with the SGR. Passenger services returning with a new ferry and passenger terminal under development to revive lake transport. These upgrades are part of a broader government push to restore inland water transport across the Lake Victoria basin. KPA is also developing smaller ports including Sio Port, Usenge Pier, Muhuru Bay to build a connected network of landing sites.

Construction of the Usenge Pier in Bondo, Siaya County, has begun after a groundbreaking ceremony led by His Excellency President @WilliamsRuto . Phase one, set for completion in six months, is part of a KES 600M project by the KPA. It will encompass supply, installation/construction, testing, commissioning and handing over of earthworks (cut, fill and leveling), perimeter wall, main gate and guard house. Others include landscaping works and construction of 25 m wide by 200 m long jetty. The new pier will serve as a modern fish landing site and transport hub, cutting road travel time from Kisumu by half an hour. The site will position Lake Victoria as suitable for port logistics, cargo handling transportation, passenger movement and fish processing while accelerating the economic development within the lake region. KPA, as the leading Government implementing agency, has successfully driven the vision with upgrades progressing in smaller lake ports starting with the launch of the first phase of Homa Bay Pier in May 2025. Similar developments are planned for Sio Port, Asembo Bay, Mbita, Muhuru Bay, Karugu and Luanda K'Otieno. These are the nodes that will connect the lakeside communities providing efficient and reliable water transport. @SDoT_Kenya @PSSDTransport @TransportKE @mohamed_daghar @davis_chirchir

KPA MD Capt. William Ruto has lauded the Authority's existing partnership with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), underscoring a shared vision and collaboration that has driven KPA’s development agenda. He highlighted transformative projects including Berth 19, the Kipevu Oil Terminal, and the Port of Lamu as evidence of CCCC’s technical excellence and reliable on-time delivery. The MD made the remarks today during an inspection visit to the ongoing Berth 19B construction site at the Port of Mombasa, where he received the CCCC Chairman Mr. Song Hailiang and his high-level delegation. “Through these collaborations we are modernizing Kenya’s ports and strengthening our position as a leading maritime gateway serving more than 500 million people in over 10 countries,” Capt. Ruto added. On his part, CCCC Chairman Song Hailiang commended KPA’s role in transforming the Port of Mombasa into a strategic hub serving global shipping routes, noting the port’s strong performance with an annual growth in the range of 10–20%. “Our collaboration with KPA demonstrates the value of strong partnerships in achieving sustainable infrastructure development that drives economic growth, creates jobs, and supports the blue and green economies,” Mr. Song said. The CCCC Chairman emphasized the importance of integrated infrastructure and logistics connectivity in reducing costs, enhancing efficiency, and unlocking regional economic potential. KPA's General Manager Infrastructure Development Eng. Matthews Amuti was also present.

A second call by the @VikingCruises vessel has brought 789 passengers and 476 crew to the Port of Mombasa this morning. This is the 5th cruise ship to dock this season, with two more expected before the circuit ends.
