Bee or fly? The pollinators in the pictures below are flies! Drone flies masquerade as bees with various striping patterns that are almost perfect matches to many bee species. They are such good bee mimics that they even have similar flight and nectaring behaviors as bumble bees!

As I stepped up to take a picture of this delightful ‘Save the Pollinators’ display at a highway rest stop in Illinois, a stranger said to me, ‘You are taking a picture of that nasty thing?!’ 👆🏼Exactly why we need these displays all around!! #PlantNative #AdvocateForInsects

More than 900 @monarchwatch tags were recovered from monarch overwintering sites in central Mexico during the 2021 tagging season. All of the tags have been examined and the “Tag recoveries from central Mexico” list has been updated. To view the list: monarchwatch.org/tagrecoveries

🦋!!!THIS HAPPENED TODAY!!!🦋@Jessicalinton86 found a Mottled Duskywing @PineryProvPark. This means that at least some of the offspring of individuals re-introduced last year successfully overwintered. ONE BIG STEP FORWARD!! More to come but, for now, way to go #teambutterfly!

One frequent (and thoughtful) question we get asked is whether roadside habitat is safe for pollinators. From our blog archives, Senior Pollinator Conservation Specialist Jennifer Hopwood explains: xerces.org/blog/pollinato…
