Thank you for calling this out, @charlottschreu. The debate is full of people speaking about victims while ignoring what victims are actually saying. Some of the replies here only prove the point.

The Victims & Courts Bill was in the Lords yesterday. Encouraging progress for the long-standing campaigns of @TraceyHansonLdn on the ULS scheme, @OpenJustice4All and @MurderedAbroad. Thanks to Peers across the House pushing to improve support and information for victims.

During the second reading of the Courts and Tribunals Bill, @DavidLammy spoke about the need for victims to be better represented in our justice system, and even named our founder, along with other victim-survivors crucial to our campaign, in his remarks. Real progress.

Sitting in the gallery yesterday was a fascinating experience. Hearing different perspectives across the jury trial debate - and many female MPs sharing not only their constituents’ experiences but their own - was incredibly powerful. Moments like this remind us why voices and lived experience matter in shaping justice. There should be no question that reform is needed in our justice system. It always gives me pause when I hear arguments about holding onto 800-year traditions as if that alone is reason enough not to change. Every other part of society has modernised - technology, healthcare, education - yet justice is too often expected to stand still. The world is a very different place now. If the system is to retain - or perhaps regain - trust and legitimacy, it has to evolve. Reform should not be about weakening justice, but strengthening it: ensuring it is fit for the future and better balanced for everyone involved, including both victims/complainants and defendants.
