The African #BeneficialOwnership #Transparency (AfBOT) Network is a member-led initiative, convened by the @AfDB_Group & the UK government, with support from Open Ownership. Today, the Network convened a side event at the @_AfricanUnion STC meetings in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

As Africa intensifies efforts to curb illicit financial flows (IFFs), beneficial ownership transparency continues to be a critical pillar for strengthening accountability, protecting public resources, and enhancing domestic resource mobilisation. Speaking at the side session, "Who Really Owns Africa's Resources?", held during the Joint 9th Session of the African Union (AU) Specialised Technical Committee (STC) on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration and the 5th STC Session on Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, on 21 July 2026, TJNA's Executive Director, Ms. @chenaimukumba, highlighted that beneficial ownership transparency is far more than another transparency reform; it is a strategic tool for identifying the real individuals behind companies and legal arrangements used to facilitate money laundering, tax abuse, corruption, and other illicit financial activities. "The High-Level Panel on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa called on us to 'track, stop and get' illicit financial flows. Beneficial ownership transparency is central to this agenda because it enables us to identify the natural persons behind illicit financial activities, pierce the veil of complex corporate structures, and close the loopholes that facilitate illicit financial flows."
