I live just south of LAX and rarely go up to Downtown LA due to heavy traffic and homelessness in certain parts. With that said, there's a ton of things to do. Amusement Parks: 1) Disneyland (Orange County) 2) Knotts Berry Farm (OC) 3) Knotts Soak City (next to Knotts Berry Farm) 4) Universal Studios 5) Six Flags Magic Mountain (bit of a drive north, for roller coaster lovers) Museums/Sights: 1) The Getty 2) La Brea Tar Pits & Museum 3) California Science Center 4) Griffith Park & Observatory 5) Queen Mary (Long Beach) 6) Aquarium of the Pacific (LB) If you like the beach scenery (less hectic), stay in the South Bay area (Hermosa, Manhattan, Marina Del Rey, Redondo Beach) which is just south of LAX. Tons of hotels... not sure about bnbs. If I was a tourist, I'd check out Long Beach shoreline village area. Lots of restaurants and places to walk around and do.
