@AllanLTepper @ProVideo Allan, are you safe to take the 1080 60p footage the Portta captures back to 30p after an edit, could you go to 24p? Or would this look bad like taking the original non progressive footage to a lower framerate?

Thank you Opus Signinum. These two PORTTA units can also capture and de-interlace in real-time to 640x480 at 60.00 progressive frames per second. As you probably know, 640x480 is a square-pixel equivalent of 720x480 (which uses horizontal pixels). I focused in the review on the direct to 1080p. My understanding is that YouTube doesn't treat 640x480 as a first class citizen (I have read that it stretches it horizontally), but I suppose maybe you have some other use case in mind where it would be good to have it in 640x480.

@AllanLTepper @ProVideo Thank you for the review Allan, I find your articles and reviews to be great. I did follow your technique with Resolve and use it all the time. Can the Portta capture something from SD 720x480 in 30p or 60p making the interlace footage progressive on the capture?

As far as I know, the Decimator is an in-line scaler, but not a recorder, although I have never used a Decimator to date. The two PORTTA devices I reviewed are also recorders. I have done this complete process with Resolve and reviewed it in an article, but (as I wrote in the conclusions), it's not feasible when you have hundreds of hours of material to process.

@ID_AA_Carmack "but nearly all video is actually going to be shown by YouTube and social media on 60 fps displays" - displayed - yes, but most of professional 4K content is shot at 24 fps with 1/48s shutter speed. You don't want 30 or 60 soap opera stuff. At cinema it's bumped to 48 or 72 fps.

Is there any good reason for cameras to ever suggest 24 fps video? I tend to think that is almost always a poor choice, and users should have to go out of their way to select it. If you are recording something that will be cut into an actual shown-in-a-theater movie, then yes, you need to shoot at 24 fps to match film standards, but nearly all video is actually going to be shown by YouTube and social media on 60 fps displays. 24 fps guarantees not just a low framerate, but an uneven one, as frames get presented in a 3/2 repeated cadence (or worse, a 4/2/2/2 repeat if it gets converted to 30 fps video somewhere along the way). 120 fps displays can show 24 fps video at a constant repeat rate of 5, but I would wager that less than 10% of the video seconds today are in software and hardware properly configured to do that, and you would still be better off with 30 (or 60) fps video. There was a period where some video encoders or decoders could only just barely do 4k at 24 fps and couldn’t manage 30, but I don’t think that is common today.
