@giancar73012035 yeah because the story is optional, the game is advertised first and foremost as a PvPvE extraction shooter, I didn't need a single line of dialogue to kill the complier and there is no beginning or end, the game wouldn't last if people play for the lore and then leave

@Mapocolops the gameplay loop doesn't incentivise build-crafting though, you can't experiment with different core and implant combinations because you'll lose them and you have limited inventory and vault space so it's best to take what's most viable

Marathon is a game with some of the coolest and fun build crafting potential and it’s sadly been frequently reduced to the most boring meta imaginable. Any high level clips I see of the game I don’t even need to finish because you know how it’s gonna end. Copycat loadouts on every team, 5 bubbles, hop around them and shoot a guy with your shotgun of the week, throw/receive 10 nades thrown through a doorway, rinse and repeat. There might still be a gold bully in use acting as a makeshift turret down a hallway. An unfortunate side effect is this is most of what people on the outside of the game see which doesn’t really pull them in, but it’s so much more than that. Bungie is at the top of their game as always with gunplay and it is a shooter lover’s dream. Amazing team synergy with different shells, a lot of fun abilities tied to implants, cores and weapon mods with a genuinely great spread of weapons but good luck seeing someone use anything other than their Misriah rn 🤣 It’s one of the main reasons I’d be so excited for a PvP arena mode because I think you’d start to see more fun anti-meta builds and experimentation either with prebuilt or limited loadouts instead of the do or die extraction environment where if you don’t bring that thing everyone is using you’ll lose all your stuff. Still think this is what ranked mode should be to be honest, climbing through the ranks of Arachne’s skinning arena. (this is a pipe dream I know it’ll still be meta spam but there would be ROOM for people to relax more and be creative instead of meta) That’s why I think Sponsored Dire Marsh works so well as a similar concept because people love this game but sometimes want a warm up, or a cool down type of playlist before it gets to the sweaty stressful stuff. A lot of people play games for different reasons and it’s part of why Marathon can take its toll being a mostly high octane run experience. I find myself wanting to play the game everyday but also not having the energy to commit because I can’t turn my brain off and chill. More of a random scattered thoughts vent post idk what can really be done about it as meta will always meta in a competitive space I just also think it’s boring and doesn’t look fun to play in a game that’s so fucking fun!!
