Bloodborne the type of game to ask: cone or bucket?

@Gravantus @PinkertonsGhost That's true but I believe this is because the great ones are "sympathetic in spirit" and they desire power over humans, due to their sympathetic nature they desire a child to take care of, and more great ones = more power.

I mean the item description says that each Great One loses its child and yearns for a surrogate. The motive of the Great Ones, who have ascended, is that very human desire for children. The Healing Church, on the other hand, is attempting to ascend and performing all these messed up experiments and, because they are caught up in this scientific endeavor, cannot comprehend the idea of the love between a mother and child, first with Kos and the Orphan then with Yharnam and Mergo (and possibily the Vileblood queen). But still, either way, whether the motive is a child or for power, that's a very understandable motivation compared to Lovecraft's Old Ones.

Very unpopular opinion, but exploring themes of motherhood and whatnot in Bloodborne is much more interesting than reiterating, "did you know. . . Bloodborne. . . was inspired by HP Lovecraft?" again and again. The greatest irony is Bloodborne isn't even a cosmic horror story.

@Gravantus @PinkertonsGhost How is having children their motive? Procreating is just a means to an end, their main goal I believe Is to ascend further into the cosmos, and break the barrier between the waking world and the nightmare realm; allowing full great one influence across the world.

It uses the aesthetics of cosmic horror, but the story itself doesn't match cosmic horror at all. Lovecraft's Old Ones are purposely incomprehensible, while the Great Ones in BB have a clear motive - they want children. Likewise the conceit of cosmic horror is that feeling of powerlessness, there's a feeling of being so low on the totem pole, being an ant compared to gods. In Bloodborne, you're literally killing the gods and end up ascending in one of the endings. The people are not powerless to the Great Ones.

These people are actual robots, they want an echo chamber lol.

@flailing_weasel @saintiyla if you want to claim that bloodborne has lore focused on femininity (which it doesn't) then it would be about pregnancy; not menstruation. "Mensis" is a latin word used in certain contexts that just means moon or month, which (due to the nature of the nightmare) makes more sense.
