More fun publisher surveillance: Elsevier embeds a hash in the PDF metadata that is *unique for each time a PDF is downloaded*, this is a diff between metadata from two of the same paper. Combined with access timestamps, they can uniquely identify the source of any shared PDFs.

@vdlorenzo_CNB Reproducibility is at the core of Science and sharing speeds research up. Competitors, owners of knowledge, seem like a vocabulary orthogonal to the scientific process. Many examples of business working on top of open tools.

Much debate these days on data/code sharing, open standards, easing IP access etc. I'm altogether for all of them. But reality is that beyond appealing to generosity, there are few incentives to walk that way. Companies (& many academics) not keen to help possible competitors ☹️
