My personal take on the Harvey Elliott saga is that Villa were in serious PSR trouble and simply couldn’t afford to bring players in outright. So they struck a deal with Liverpool. Liverpool, knowing Villa’s situation, likely worked with them by saying you can take him now and pay next season when your PSR position improves, with a straightforward 10 game trigger built in. Elliott wasn’t exactly favoured under Slot last season and still managed 28 appearances, so a 10 game clause was hardly some unrealistic target. It felt like a fair agreement that suited both sides and gave Villa the player they wanted without immediate financial strain. Then Villa sacked their sporting director and suddenly seem far less keen on the deal. Instead of honouring an agreement that was clearly structured to help them during a difficult PSR period, it now looks like they’re trying to backtrack. That’s not a great look in itself, but what makes it worse is the player being stuck in the middle of a sport versus business tug of war. If you agree to £35m after 10 games, then want him to play but don’t want to pay, it just comes across as unprofessional and embarrassing. Either back the deal you made or don’t make it in the first place, because from the outside it looks like wanting all the benefits without accepting the responsibility.
