It increasingly looks like fusion may soon be commercial—and policymakers and business executives around the world have done little to prepare for the wide-reaching consequences. time.com/7302543/nuclea…

Time for a new 6-month update from CEO @BobMumgaard about what we’re up to at Commonwealth Fusion Systems: ️️ ⚡️ See the site in Chesterfield County, Virginia, for our first ARC fusion power plant ️⚡️ Hear how Google has agreed to purchase 200 megawatts of power — half of ARC's output — starting in the early 2030s ️⚡️ See new SPARC tokamak parts due soon, including its vacuum vessel and first magnets ️⚡️ Learn about the supply chain we’re building that helps SPARC and also the broader fusion industry Bob Mumgaard: “When we founded the company, we had a roadmap: Start with magnets, then build a factory to make more magnets for SPARC, build and operate SPARC, go build ARC, build more ARCs. We’re still on that same roadmap, and it’s all coming together." #FusionEnergy #Science

Two major technology transformations came into alignment today in Washington, DC: AI and fusion energy. At an artificial intelligence event I attended today, the White House released an AI action plan that calls for the US to put a priority on reliable, dispatchable power and specifically to “embrace new energy generation sources at the technological frontier,” including fusion energy. Here’s why this is important. AI is a major technological force, but its data centers need electricity. OpenAI, the maker of the ChatGPT AI tool, said this week it expects to have more than a total of 1 million AI chips in service by the end of 2025 — and after that they’re headed toward 100 million. That’s a tremendous amount of new power demand. When we put fusion on the power grid in the early 2030s, we think it’ll be the ideal power source not just for data centers but to help power the global economy’s energy needs. Fusion power plants can be built just about anywhere, with essentially unlimited fuel and no emissions. Fusion has no reliance on pipelines or weather, and it’ll operate 24x7. @Google, another major AI force with its Gemini tool, is helping us to build this fusion future with a new investment in CFS and an agreement to buy 200 megawatts of electricity from our first ARC power plant. That partnership, which we announced in June, is a clear sign there’s demand for what we’re offering. As I told @BloombergTV this morning about our Google deal, “Hyperscalers are fundamentally techno-optimists that believe in a future that is abundant and the technology can be used to solve problems and enable new things. Having that involved with fusion is a really good match. That's a big signal that fusion is wanted.” The government can help bring fusion’s benefits to the grid faster. Fully funding programs like the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program would help several fusion energy companies, including CFS, so people and businesses can benefit from this new source of energy as soon as possible. Scroll to the comments to catch the link to the Bloomberg TV interview. #FusionEnergy

I don't understand the new 50% copper tariffs. They're not going to jumpstart US production, aren't targeted to countries in which we're in a trade war, and will drive up prices on a wide range of essential goods. A couple mines in the US are world-class and economic without the tariffs but have been stuck in permitting hell for years. The NEPA process for Resolution Copper in AZ, the best undeveloped resource in the US, was started in 2012. Other mines are not economic today, would be with a 50% tariff, but no company is going to greenlight their development based on these tariffs. It takes 5-10 years to start production for early stage mines and a similar time just to get payback of investment. Industry has little confidence the tariffs will still be in place when they reach production. There are 2 countries for which copper makes up >1% of total US imports from them: Chile (almost 50%) and Peru (about 10%). Neither country has been singled out by the Administration for unfair trade practices. We do import from Canada and Mexico but it's <1% of total imports from both. All of these countries have been long-standing allies of the US. Meanwhile, copper is an input into building materials, energy infrastructure, vehicles, aircraft, electronics, data centers, etc. Commodities get priced at the margin. This tariff will raise costs for all buyers of copper and will translate into higher costs of many products, all for seemingly little upside.

A compelling read from @nytimes, highlighting the intense global race to define the future of energy. The article does an excellent job laying out the scale of China’s clean energy acceleration— more wind and solar installed last year than the rest of the world combined, along with a rapidly widening lead in critical technologies from EV batteries to nuclear power. This shows what's possible when you have technology that can scale figured out. This piece really reinforces for me the monumental challenge and opportunity before us at @CFS_energy. The future of energy demands scale, security, and abundance. Fusion checks the box on each one of those needs. It’s the ultimate game-changer, the last new power source humanity will ever need. It could scale even faster. This is what it will take to enable what will be the largest energy transition in history. Whoever wins this will be able to set the trajectory of energy, and everything relies on energy. We intend to win. That's a bold ambition, and we're making steady progress toward it, with SPARC and then ARC. Historic news for CFS: We’ve signed a landmark agreement with @Google, a multifaceted partnership that dramatically advances our commercial fusion energy mission: ⚡️Google signed an offtake agreement for 200 megawatts of power from our first ARC power plant ⚡️Google is increasing its corporate investment in CFS ⚡️Google has the option to procure power from future ARCs This deal is a very strong signal that the world wants the clean, secure power that fusion offers. Together, we’re catalyzing the fusion market. #FusionEnergy #PowerMoves

Fusion is coming... to Chesterfield County, Virginia. In an enormous development for CFS and for the commercialization of fusion energy, we've committed to build the world's first grid-scale fusion power plant, ARC, in Virginia. We'll independently finance, build, own, and operate this first-of-its-kind technology so we can start generating clean, carbon-free energy in the early 2030's. We'll also collaborate with @DominionEnergy Virginia to help smooth ARC's path to the grid, benefitting from their development and technical expertise while helping the utility learn about fusion. Check out what this means for CFS here: bit.ly/4gF0s1c #PowerMoves
