Following our meeting with Governor González-Colón, we met with Puerto Rico Department of Housing Secretary Luis A. Martinez; HUD Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, Ronald Kurtz; HUD Southeast Regional Administrator Denise Cleveland-Leggett; and their teams for a closer review of ongoing work related to disaster recovery supported by the CDBG-DR and CDBG-MIT programs. Both are key to ensure the long term recovery of the island following Hurricane Maria and other disasters. We also met with the Puerto Rico Department of Economic Development and Commerce to discuss the Opportunity Zones 2.0 Program in Puerto Rico as we prepare to leverage this federal tool to incentivize economic activity in low-income areas.

We held a meeting with John Kanig, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico–U.S. Virgin Islands High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Program to discuss several initiatives focused on strengthening programs in overdose prevention efforts and improve public safety response capabilities. Governor González-Colón has consistently supported the HIDTA Program and its interagency approach among federal and state partners to disrupt drug trafficking organizations and advance public safety across Puerto Rico.
