I am immensely proud of the change we have made in this government so far. From lifting half a million children out of poverty to taking on the water bosses. But the message that people in Calderdale and across the country have shared with us is clear. They want a government who speaks to them and to feel the change we are making. That’s why I’ve called on the prime minister to set out a timetable to step down and ideally one which gives us the best choice of alternatives. That is what I told Matt Chorley today.

What we cannot have now is a cabinet coup or a palace stitch-up that simply delivers a Wes Streeting coronation. Nobody who has been part of Keir Starmer’s top team can credibly present themselves as a fresh start. We need an orderly transition and a proper democratic leadership election.

Now is the time for the Prime Minister to accept that he can’t lead us into the next election. He needs to set out a timetable for his departure, so we can take a different political direction and deliver the change people voted for in 2024. This is not a situation any Labour MP wanted to be in, but burying our heads in the sand would hand the keys to No. 10 to Nigel Farage. That would be unforgivable.

As I’ve said, Keir Starmer needs to go. But not through a Cabinet stitch-up or palace coup. And not through a snap leadership election designed to hand Wes Streeting a coronation. We need a proper democratic contest involving the whole Labour movement so we get this right.

Sir Keir Starmer is a man of great integrity who has led the Labour Party through difficult times. There will be those that disagree with me but I think it is genuinely time for him to step aside as PM in an orderly manner. I will make a further statement tomorrow.
