@elanmiller @elanmiller all those storytelling jobs in marketing & comms. But that’s also a miss - as it risks using story only as superficial, veneer. The real PoV should be CEO-led and essentially a manifestation of a company’s strategy & the category they want to build & own.

Our first investor, Pieter (@P_Kemps), is leaving @peakxvpartners (fka Sequoia Capital). I need to tell you about a story from June 2021. Because that day taught me something about belief that I didn't understand until now. We're on a Zoom call. @ADPList has no revenue, just 1,000 people doing something we can't explain. I'm mid-pitch - the "monetization" slide every founder has because every VC demands it. Pieter stops me. "Felix, go back to slide 4." Slide 4 is a screenshot. A mentor in Brazil is talking to a designer in Lagos at 2AM their time. "Why are they awake at 2 AM for a free Zoom call?" he asks. I start my rehearsed answer. He cuts me off. "No. I want to know what you think. Not what you think I want to hear." I paused. Thinking whether to give the founder the answer or the honest answer. "I have no idea. But whatever it is, it's more powerful than money. And I think that's the entire point." Pieter smiled. The smile you get when you say something true that you're scared to say out loud. "That's the company. Build that. The business model will follow the behavior." That was the moment @ADPList became real when someone told us to trust the anomaly, not fix it. Pieter gave us permission to be weird. To trust the behavior that didn't fit the pattern. To build @ADPList the way it needed to be built, not the way it was supposed to be built.
