The Taxes and Levies charged on fuel in Kenya constitutes about 80% of the actual cost of the product itself. The ripple effect of surges in fuel prices on overall market dynamics places an obligation on the government to make concessions, when necessary, to cushion consumers from global spikes in prices. While the reduction of VAT from 16% to 13% is one such concession, it is far from adequate in the grand scheme of things, considering Kenyans already pay the highest pump prices regionally. The increase announced by EPRA indicates tone-deaf leadership that ignores the plight of the people. This is when the role of our parliamentarians in representation and oversight must be activated. The pain of wananchi must never go unrecognised or unresolved.

Kenya’s government creates a problem that didn’t exist, then offers a solution that doesn’t solve it.

It is actually a crime under Kenyan law for public officers to give false/misleading information. We have been told a bunch of open lies about the fuel situation with Ruto himself, as recently as 30th March, telling us his “strategic interventions”had “mitigated price increases” only to hit us with a 40 shilling increase two weeks later. Let me not even mention that “expert” or his string of lies. We are placing the pain at the pump squarely on Ruto.

Fuel subsidy scandal loading. We have fuel reserves and fuel in transit that was bought with lower prices. The Government of Ruto will subject the 350 million litres of fuel to a subsidy of about Ksh. 30 per litre and make away with Ksh. 10 billion. Watch out and see
