⚖️ "Just cut grazing" is no answer for the uplands. The High Court has rejected Wild Justice's main argument that the Dartmoor Commoners' Council should have used formal powers to restrict stock numbers. The judge found there was not enough evidence to support that claim. More importantly, the court accepted what many land managers already know: under-grazing can be just as damaging as over-grazing. Remove too much grazing pressure and you get more molinia, more scrub, more rank vegetation and a poorer-managed moor. The real question isn't simply whether there are more or fewer animals. It's whether there is the right grazing, in the right place, at the right time. That matters well beyond Dartmoor. Across the northern uplands, the same simplistic thinking often appears - poor habitat condition must mean too many stock. But the reality is far more complex, and this judgment gives weight to the case for evidence-based management over slogans. Read the full article - link in the comments 👇
