This post may end up being entirely in vain because the issue I'm about to post about has become so polarising. The whole ethnic-versus-civic Australian debate inspired me to look at my family tree on Ancestry. I currently trace my family tree back only to the early 1800's, which is five generations from me. As my Grandfather immigrated here from Wessex in England in 1900, does that make me British-Australian in the eyes of some strict ethno-nationalists, despite my Grandmothers side of the family going back to the early 1800's? This set me off thinking about my nephews and nieces and their children. One of my brothers married the daughter of Italian immigrants. Their children and grandchildren, like me, can trace their family tree back to the early 1800's at least in this country, but on their Mum's side, it only goes back to post WW2 immigration. Are they Australian or Italian-Australian, or is it 50-50? The more you research, the more complicated it becomes, especially after WW2 where we had immigrants from various parts of the globe as opposed to the mother country. To make many of the arguments that ethnic-Australians are making is like trying to put the genie back in the bottle. i.e., Impossible. It's why I prefer the term “Heritage Australians” or “Heritage Nationalists”. If your lineage can identify a trace of forbears that contributed to the establishment of this country, fought for this country and embraced the values and ideals of this country, then you are a part of our Australian identity and are well and truly Australian. Ethnic-Nationalists want to exclude many who simply don't have a purely Anglo-Celtic ancestry, while some begrudgingly accept indigenous Australians in that group, others warmly embrace them. Civic-Australians want to ignore the huge contribution of those Anglo-Celtic Australians who forged, built and established the identity and framework of this country to the point that it was so appealing that their parents and grandparents chose to emigrate here for a better life. On both sides of the debate, ALL of them can claim an ownership of the heritage of this country's history. On both sides, they have arguments that are correct, while at the same time also have arguments that are wrong. It's why I call it a silly debate. It's dividing people who would in so many other instancesoverwhelmingly agree on most issues facing this country and the solutions to them. It's become so intense and so partisan that it may very well divide the centre-right at coming elections, creating a pathway to government for the very forces that don't care whatsoever for this country's history, its heritage, or its future and what it will look like. The ALP and Greens would happily see our forebears' efforts disappear from the history books if it meant they could hold power. It's why I plead with @2worldsPodcast @OzraeliAvi @RealRukshan @ProfJoannaHowe @shallowchal @reignitedem and others participating in this debate to lay down their swords of difference and instead to focus on the real enemy to this country, because if the ALP wins again in 28, I fear we lose everything, and then this debate will really be looked back upon as silly. There is plenty for us to unite around; we need to start doing it if we truly love this country and what it can still be. Any of the above are welcome to join me on my podcast to discuss or indeed any other person who wants to get this country back to what we once had or at least as close as possible to it.
