As the title race comes down to a 5-game play-off between Man City and Arsenal, it’s worth remembering that a decision on City’s 115/130 charges is yet to be published. Per the below, it’s been 17 months since the evidence was heard (closing arguments were 4-5 Dec 2024). PL rules require the provision of a decision “as soon as practicable” after the hearing. The fact we’re still waiting, 17 months on, is damning for the PL’s Independent Commission and the arbitrators involved. Sir Geoffrey Vos once stated that civil matters before the Court of Appeal should take at most 3 months to reach a decision, even in the most complex cases. 17 months for this matter is reaching the point of dereliction of duty. A decision late in the summer is highly problematic for the PL because it could impact legal challenges for this season’s results (title, UCL spots, relegation) and result in a defunct team for next season’s PL. Same thing if the decision is produced early next season. No public decision for a further year is simply not tenable either. The arbitrators must realise the need to issue the decision imminently and I’d be amazed if it isn’t out by the end of May. Not sure how anything else is possible defensible.
