BREAKING: “Yet again, a carriage horse violently spooked at the 7th Ave entrance to Central Park today, flipping the carriage, throwing and trapping the driver underneath in yet another terrifying and completely preventable crash in Midtown.  The driver was reportedly seriously injured and taken away in an ambulance, and there are reports of injuries to other drivers and passengers. We still do not know the traumatized horse's condition. NYCLASS urgently calls on @SpeakerMenin and the @NYCCouncil @Lynn4NYC to quickly reintroduce and fast track Ryder’s Law before more people or horses are seriously injured or killed. Today, both a heat advisory and an air quality alert were in effect, yet these horses were still being forced to work in dangerous conditions. These incidents keep happening because horses are skittish prey animals who do not belong in chaotic city traffic. Seventy-eight percent of polled New York voters support passing Ryder’s Law, along with the Mayor, the Central Park Conservancy, and countless horse experts and welfare groups. The City Council must act now before the next tragedy occurs.” Edita Birnkrant, Executive Director, NYCLASS

The animal advocates leading the campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in NYC are Jewish. In an effort to discredit their advocacy, horse-drawn carriage driver Jill Adamski posted an antisemitic cartoon on X, implying that they're motivated by money rather than concern for the horses. The advocates have nothing to gain personally from helping the carriage horses. Instead of debating the issue on its merits, Adamski resorted to a classic antisemitic trope — portraying Jews as money-driven manipulators. In doing so, she is fanning the flames of antisemitism.

Watch this video to hear what tourists really think about NYC’s horse carriages. 78% of New Yorkers already support ending them. The truth is impossible to ignore. 💔Horses forced into traffic, collapsing or dying on pavement, crashing into cars, used until they’re broken and discarded. Horses deserve better. @NYCCouncil @SpeakerMenin, let’s give the people what they want and reintroduce & pass Ryder’s Law this year: nyclass.org/stophorseabuse/

Pets are family. That's why the Council is forming its first-ever Animal Welfare Caucus: to make pet ownership more affordable and build a more compassionate city for every New Yorker, whether they have two legs or four. 🐾   Watch @HarveyforNY and @SpeakerMenin break it down:

After the Williamsburg Groundhog Day event used a live groundhog, NYCLASS and Humane Long Island pressed organizers to end the practice. They have now formally pledged that starting next year, NO live groundhog or wild animal will ever be used at this event again. The event will shift to a human Groundhog look-alike contest led by @CurtisSliwa — a humane, people-centered tradition going forward. Groundhogs belong in burrows, not boroughs — and this change shows how public pressure can move NYC toward more compassionate policies.

Another runaway carriage horse, this time crashing into Midtown traffic. Thankfully no one was hurt, but that was luck. Horses don’t belong in chaotic city streets. This is about safety, humanity, and common sense. It’s time to pass RydersLaw and end horse-drawn carriages in NYC.

These carriages are inhumane to horses and a threat to street safety. We shouldn't wait for a death to act. The City Council must act to ban horse carriages while facilitating a smooth transition for drivers into alternative opportunities.

On Thursday, a carriage horse ran wild down Sixth Avenue in @vmmaloney district, crashing into a taxi and other vehicles as people ran out of the way to avoid being trampled. In a split second, someone could have easily been seriously injured or killed. These incidents keep happening because frightened horses instinctively run, and chaotic city streets are fundamentally incompatible with them. We look forward to working with Speaker @JulieMenin @NYCCouncil and @NYCMayor to finally end this recurring public-safety danger, as most major cities already have.

Only one week into the new year, it happened again — just as we warned. On Thursday, this carriage horse ran wild into incoming traffic and crashed into cars. Forcing nervous prey animals, hardwired to bolt when frightened, to drag open carriages in chaotic Manhattan is reckless endangerment. While cities around the world have banned this, NYC is still gambling with lives in 2026. @NYCCouncil @Lynn4NYC must advance and pass Ryder’s Law before someone is hurt again or killed. @NYCMayor

Congratulations to Julie Menin on her election as Speaker of the New York City Council. NYCLASS looks forward to working together to build a kinder, more compassionate New York City for people and animals alike.👏🏽🐾

I’m deeply humbled that my colleagues have elected me as Speaker of the @NYCCouncil. I will work tirelessly to be a Speaker for each of them, and for everyone we represent across our great city.

@transportworker There's NOTHING about this vet that is bias. This is an excuse b/c you’re afraid that the truth will reveal these horses are in horrific condition.Even children who know nothing about horses can see.. NYCLASS didn't even know this vet and that's a fact. Your desperation showing🤣

Another NYCLASS lie. Carriage horse owners didn’t illegally refuse to have their horses’ blood tested or trotted indoors by a vet that carriage drivers believe to be biased. The Health Department told owners they could decline, and said the city couldn’t guarantee chain of custody of samples, raising concerns of tampering. @NYCCouncil

CBS News clip: Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani reiterated his position: “I support removing horse carriages from Central Park.” “I plan to deliver on that.” His statement comes amid news this week that carriage horse owners refused city-mandated welfare exams for their horses, even as horses have collapsed, died, run wild, and shown clear signs of distress. @ZohranKMamdani

@transportworker @ZohranKMamdani @TWULocal100 This is a joke! TWU is a joke of a business. Nobody cares about developing this stables, it’s hilarious that this is your only angle at an ulterior motive. It’s pathetic. The only people tha don’t care about the horses is your cruel business and everybody knows it, just give up

"I support removing horse carriages from Central Park,” Mamdani said. If Mayor-Elect @ZohranKMamdani was correctly quoted by CBS News, it will be an absolute betrayal of @twulocal100’s immigrant carriage driver workforce in favor of the likes of Randy Maestro and his real estate interest clients who don’t care about the horses; they only care about developing the stables. This would be siding with developers eager to replace the stables with high-rises, and with animal rights zealots, instead of blue-collar workers.

We were also surprised to see Intro 1255 scheduled for a Dec. 31 hearing, which forecloses a vote this year despite 37 co-sponsors. @Lynn4NYC, as a co-sponsor of this humane bill to prohibit painful rodeo devices, would you consider scheduling the hearing earlier next week so the Council can vote on Dec. 18?
Louis Cholden-Brown@lcholdenbrown

The City Council just scheduled a hearing for DECEMBER 31st! Tbf, this is under the supermajority rule but still brutal for everyone involved.
