But it is exciting because it identifies a mechanism that could partly explain why older adults are at such high risk, and be the basis of further treatment and prevention research.

Delighted to have my paper published in Immunology. We investigated if/how macrophages from human lungs respond to SARS-CoV-2 spike and envelope proteins, and whether these responses were affected by age or smoking. @TBImmunologyTCD doi.org/10.1111/imm.13…

This might explain why previous trials of adjunctive retinol to TB therapy have failed, and suggests that using inhaled exogenous ATRA may unlock vitamin A's efficacy for TB patients

ATRA is produced from circulating retinol at the site of action, but there are several steps needed before ATRA can have its beneficial effects - including two-step oxidation of retinol to ATRA and then delivery of ATRA to its nuclear receptors by carrier proteins.

The red line is what happened to the reported rates of ‘viral-like illness’ - a surrogate for COVID cases - back during the first wave. Look how steeply the curve drops off with widespread buy-in to a lockdown. We did this before and can do it again! #COVID19Ireland

Hydatid disease not endemic in Ireland? So they say, but myself and Caroline Conlon would beg to differ (new case report). 🐑🪱🐕🪱🧍‍♂️ What is it about Galway and weird pathology? bit.ly/2W2iaoj @HelenTuite1
