Ethiopia and Djibouti were the first countries in East and horn of Africa to construct and own a fully electrified SGR. Tanzania joined in 2023 with her 160 km railway. The 753 km railway cost Ethiopia and Djibouti $4 billion to construct and it reduced the travel time from 3-7 days to just 20 hours. Ethiopia owns 75% while Djibouti keeps the 25% of the railway.
