@BestMovieMom It made drug dealers look cool, charismatic and interesting. (They’re not.) The guy who made it thought hard drugs like crack should be legalized. (They shouldn’t.) It was a politically correct show to “love”. It was stupid.

The Wire (2002) was nearly cancelled every season. HBO kept renewing it reluctantly despite mediocre ratings, only because critics wouldn't stop calling it the greatest show ever made.

@sagewilyam @ianmiles You studied this for 10 years and don't realize the geopolitical importance of Taiwan, the fact that China is *already* our enemy, the long term consequences of projecting weakness and abandoning democratic allies, the list goes on and on. Are you faking your resume?

@Panama_Joe1 @ianmiles I have spent more than ten years studying geopolitics and U.S. military history as a military officer. I wouldn't even be able to do my job if I didn't. Just because I have a different opinion on this issue doesn’t mean I lack understanding of geopolitics or history.

Trump is shifting on Taiwan. He won't call it a country. He accepts China as the regional power and won't send Americans 9,500 miles to fight over it. He wants the chip industry moved here instead. "The Chinese just don't want to see this place — we'll call it a place, because nobody knows how to define it — but they don't want to see it go independent. I'd like to see everybody making chips in Taiwan come over to us in America. I'm not looking to have somebody go independent. And, you know, are we supposed to travel 9,500 miles to fight a war? I'm not looking for that. When you look at the odds, China is a very, very powerful and big country. That's a very small island. Think of it; it's 59 miles away. We're 9,500 miles away. That's a little bit of a difficult problem. If you look at the history, Taiwan was developed because we had presidents that didn't know what the hell they were doing. They stole our chip industry" China is 59 miles from the strait. The US is 9,500. The chips are what he cares about, and he wants them in America, not defended on an island next to China. He's done playing world policeman in Asia.

I can’t say I disagree with him. Here, he’s being practical. Why should we send people to go fight China over Taiwan, a small island right next to China? I’m not saying Taiwan does not matter. It does matter. They make a huge share of the world’s advanced chips, and that is a serious strategic issue. But that still does not mean it matters enough to send American soldiers to die for it. Instead of preparing ourselves to fight China over Taiwan, we should be preparing to move chip making capabilities to the U.S. and to other friendly countries. That way, the problem becomes a supply chain and industrial policy issue, not a war issue. China can become a competitor to the U.S. rather than a mortal enemy. I was just talking about this yesterday with another military officer, and we both think the current policy toward Taiwan is stupid. Turning the U.S. and China into enemies that may have to fight a massive, avoidable war in the future is simply fucking stupid.

Whether China invades Taiwan is between China and Taiwan. The only reason this is of geostrategic importance to America is TSMC. Otherwise Taiwan is irrelevant to our interests. Trump understands that the easy solution to the problem is to make America the global semiconductor hub. Then China and Taiwan can work that issue out for themselves and we don’t have to care about it. America and the rest of the world are better off having critical global infrastructure in America rather than a small defenseless island at constant risk of invasion by an autocratic superpower.
Tymofiy Mylovanov@Mylovanov

Trump: China is a very powerful country. Taiwan is a very small island, 59 miles away. Taiwan was developed because presidents didn’t know what they were doing. They stole our chip industry. If we had put 100% or 200% tariffs on chips, they would have never left. 2/

I trust Trump’s statement today that an agreement with Iran is “just a matter of time.” To me, it means one thing: The probability of major escalation is now close to zero. Negotiations are clearly moving forward, just not at the speed Trump wants.

I'm skeptical that it is this simple, because if it was, the obvious and plausible strategy would be to execute as quickly as possible, without pause or delay. Instead there is this back-and-forth, stalling, reversing course, basically everything optimized to drag things out into the midterms.

Trump is frozen right now. He knows that to win the war, there will be massive costs in lives, damage to the economy, etc. But he also knows he must win the fight. There will be a personal cost to Trump. His polls will drop. They might lose Congress. But it hast to happen.
Bonchie@bonchieredstate

We have two choices. 1) Stop the one-sided ceasefire and throw everything we have at reopening the Strait, hopefully with enough time for prices to drop before November. 2) Continue to let Iran stall, ensuring inflationary pressures remain in place until it’s too late.

@scott_erocks @DanielSLoeb1 Kamala was bad, but Trump is so bad that his sycophants have to invent a parallel reality where she was apocalyptic and then use that fantasy as foil to excuse him. Trump is a disaster, here and now. Which is why despite the OP, his polling numbers are historically low.

I talk to people on Wall Street every day. I have heard some belly aching about the President from time to time, but I have literally not once heard a single person say they regret voting for Trump or, "gee, if only Kamala had won, we would be so much better off." Bloomberg News laments any of the advances our country is making for fear that they might reflect well on the @POTUS and all their news is reported through a lens of severe TDS. bloomberg.com/features/2026-…
