In 1903, After the first Black female postmaster, Minnie Cox was pressured out of her job in Mississippi, Theodore Roosevelt ordered the local post office to suspend operations. It remained closed until the following year. Roosevelt made sure Postmaster Minnie Cox's salary continued to be paid while the office was closed. Residents were instead forced to pick up their mail in a town around 30 miles away. A Mississippi post office now bares her name.
