A baby’s brain grows faster in the first three years than at any other time. What shapes it most? Simple, consistent interactions. It’s not about perfect toys or parenting—it’s about talking, singing, holding, and simply being there. When I learned this, it shifted how I viewed even the mundane. Suddenly, a diaper change became a chance to connect. What small, everyday moments have you found to be unexpectedly powerful in shaping your child’s development? How do you make the most of them?

@jessegenet @mbateman This👆 Also, from the baby's POV, there is a massive neurological difference between an environment of indifference and one that says: You are seen, and you are welcome here.

💯this is part of why I find discourse about finding it ‘creepy’ or ‘weird ‘ when strangers make cutesy comments about babies are are inclined to try to pat their heads etc so strange.. it’s a very positive part of human nature to find babies cute and even more positive that strangers in a community have an inclination to notice your baby!

What am I supposed to do to discipline a 3 year old who is INCESSANTLY whining. I’m talking about almost every single waking second of the day. Do you guys (PARENTS ONLY) have any tips for me?

this and also giving them tools: i realized kids often didn't even know they were whining. so we started this game at dinner. pick a word, any word. go around the table and say it with a different tone. surprised, happy, firm, firm and friendly, whining, shouting, etc. they think it's funny, it's so much fun. and it's really helping them hear the difference. then if they whine, we just ask (gently, non-judgmentally), what's your tone? and i don't make a big deal out of it. they recognize it, and they switch. it's been so helpful.

My most serious advice is to hack the parrot programming every 3 year old seems to have. So… they say something super whiney and you say back “we actually say — No thank you mommy, no snack for me! Now you try…” Resort to a sing song voice to make it seem fun… after a bit of repetition each of mine has caught on and will at first jokingly employ the polite language and then just use it as their default language… But yes, getting sing song-y and doing it dozens of times before they catch on doesn’t seem avoidable (so far for me at least). I’m not against discipline at all, but so far asking them to mimic a polite way of speaking has been more effective than explaining that whining sucks…

With a young child, your quick moment is their scaffolding. How you greet the neighbor, wipe a spill, or say 'we’ll try again tomorrow' sticks. To you, a blip; to them, a blueprint.

What we learn at school are mostly isolated facts from various disciplines. To solve real-world problems, we should connect them in usable forms.

@rebelEducator This obsession with accommodating the least capable or motivated is diminishing the civic life. Ironically, the least capable or motivated are the first ones to suffer the consequences.

A sure way to raise anxious kids is to hover, narrate their every move, measure them against others, and treat mistakes as catastrophes.

My 4yo loves Synthesis Tutor. But kept picking wrong answers and giggling. “Why?” “I’m joking with the Tutor.” I asked her to give the right answer and still joke. Now she says the correct answer out loud, then taps the silly one, and giggles. Feature request: an eye-roll mode for the Tutor.

Think of a secure attachment with your child as a climber's safety rope: Always there, giving them the confidence to go forward without ever holding them back. Unobtrusive, but it will be the very thing that catches them when they fall.

@HippyMomPhD This is so relatable, as we just started homeschooling our 5-year-old. I was just telling my husband how much I'm learning again!

My friend: I could NEVER homeschool my kids! Also my friend: I'm loving relearning algebra with my son. We race to see who can get the right answer first. I ask him to explain it to me & he figures it out! No one thinks they'll love teaching their kids, until they try it♥️

To be a writer in love with a writer. It's all so romantical, as Anne Shirley would say. @donswriting, thank you for being the greatest inspiration, joy, and reward of my life 🤍

Next time you're with a young child, remember: What’s just a moment in time for you can be a foundational experience for the child, quietly shaping the core of their emerging personality.

@HippyMomPhD Classical music does magic. From personal experience, it works wonders on toddlers and newborns, too.

PRO TIP: Playing classical music while your children do school work cuts down on fighting about who's making too much noise It's also supposed to make their brains work better so there's that too♥️
