@alsonickadams @humantransit I mean, you're not wrong, if this is the one chance for WeHo to get a subway, do we just take what we can get? But in the design stage it seems like well-meaning expert voices (and I do not mean mine) should be heard. Activists/experts helped protect the Sepulveda line.

@humantransit @PartyBen 1. Everyone gets that this isn't optimal, but given the political realities in America and LA, it's amazing that even this is happening. 2.Although obviously imperfect, this "squiggly line" is happening for a reason. And everyone who knows LA even a little bit gets that.

@alsonickadams @humantransit I promise it isn't snark, it's concern, that hugely expensive transit investments are so vital to LA's future that they shouldn't risk being politically-driven boondoggles. "Political realities" gave us rail lines with freeway median stops nobody uses en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_sta…

@PartyBen @humantransit It's not that his concerns aren't valid. It's that him and the rest of the snarky, "Why can't the lines go straight" critiques are ignoring the political realities on the ground in LA.

@alsonickadams I get it, we shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good when it comes to LA transit, which we need so desperately. But @humantransit's concerns are valid

I know it might be "this or nothing" and if it's built before I die (sigh) of course I'll ride it, but honestly well-designed BRT that goes in straight lines might be a better solution here, this is loop-de-loop Disneyland monorail silliness.

It's hard to stand in opposition to any transit initiative in LA, even when they're imperfect, but Jarrett makes very good points here. One subway line shouldn't try to do the work of like, 5 lines. Successful transit has clear paths and destinations.
Jarrett Walker@humantransit

Wondering what Southern California housing advocates think of this. The proposed new subway line will take a squiggly path that no actual person wants to follow. Why? To serve the City of West Hollywood, which supports density, and avoid Los Angeles, which doesn't? 1/🧵

Or, maybe, we have nice apartments and walk to nice stores along nice streets to buy two rolls of toilet paper and don’t get run over by SUVs full of 80 rolls of toilet paper trying to exit the giant garage onto the 6-lane stroad
Tobin Stone 🌐@tobinjstone

it's an idiotic, massive waste of space. A truly wealthy society would put the parking underneath the Costco, make the Costco itself the same size as the parking lot, and put apartments on top of the costco.

Easy and fun on Twitter to blame “wokeness run amok” for everything. But transit worldwide works when it costs something and is convenient and safe, and that doesn’t correlate with giant fare gates. They’re fine, leave them, sure, but this isn’t a data-supported “gotcha.”

Are there “progressives” who called harder-to-jump gates “carceral,” maybe. But mostly I give the benefit of the doubt to planners looking at transit that works elsewhere. A city so overrun with homeless and addicts that transit becomes unusable has bigger problems

I’m glad fare gates have helped improve some CA transit systems (from “apocalyptic” to “yuck”) but in fairness there are proof of payment gateless systems around the world that work fine. It’s a bit like saying “yay we made benches crappy but way fewer homeless sleep on them”
Sar Haribhakti@sarthakgh

.@Noahpinion: “Progressives often argue against measures like fare gates, labeling them “carceral” and “racist”. This demonstrates a principle that I call anarchyfare — the idea that eliminating society’s rules serves as a kind of welfare benefit for marginalized people.”
