I see much the same when DIYers come to me for financial planning. One of the reasons I don't take new fee only planning clients anymore is because all I'd get is DIYers with messed up under-diversified portfolios of dividend/meme/megacap stocks. They'd want a financial plan, but then wouldn't divert from their ways and properly implement a diversified portfolio of ETFs. I will admit, core to the issue is our industry. Too many of us at best don't take smaller clients and at worst are heavily sales-focused and have demolished any trust they had with investors. Thus, many Canadians need to turn to free advice or even subscription paid advice from blogs online. There's nothing else available to them, or they just don't trust professionals. Probably not an easy problem for the industry to fix, but in the meantime I think it's high time that regulators took a look at the lay of the land and realized that a significant number of Canadians are getting advice from such channels. Whether the creators of that online content state "this is not advice" or not, it's being implemented by average joe Canadians... I see it first hand! People advising on investment selection online must be regulated, and more than anything they need to be forced to be as transparent as we are (who we are, who regulates us, etc). If they're not, regulators should make every effort to shut them down.
