Patients who see a GP face to face are more likely to be satisfied with their care, research suggests. A study, published in the British Journal of General Practice, found patient satisfaction was lower at surgeries that relied more both on telephone appointments and consultations with staff who are not GPs. These non-GP staff may include advanced nurse practitioners, physician associates and practice-based pharmacists.

1/ A natural experiment. A researcher finds 2 general practices willing to take part in a study, organises visits & does interview within 2wks. Then learns we should ask for prior CRN approval. Tries to do things correctly next time. 3 months of bureaucracy later. No interviews.

1/13. Our new paper in BJGP Open reviews the evidence for the delivery of relational continuity of care in general practice in the United Kingdom. We specifically looked at delivery of continuity i.e. what can GP practices do to provide continuity of care to their patients (to ‘deliver’ it). This is the first post of a thread (disclaimer at the bottom). DOI: doi.org/10.3399/BJGPO.…

Trial of toolkit intervention to improve continuity in The Netherlands shows no effect. Good baseline continuity. Should they have measured UPC/COC index rather than patient reported continuity? @Dr_J_M_Dickson @DrBekkiR shttps://bmjopen.bmj.com/content/14/5/e078169.full

As always, #THISspace2023 has been really informative and inspiring! I particularly enjoyed the Lightning Talk by @PatrickBurch "The performance of continuity in a fragmented primary care system". Sounds like there are still lots of areas in PC that #humanfactors could support!

Children with chest infections are often prescribed antibiotics. However, new research showed that they get little benefit from a commonly-used antibiotic (amoxicillin).evidence.nihr.ac.uk/alert/antibiot…
