Israel and its lobby are obviously not the exclusive factor in American decline but they are a major one. John Mearsheimer tells a story about how his Israel Lobby co-author Stephen Walt was scheduled to meet with a notable presidential candidate in the lead up to the 2008 election. After their article was published the meeting was canceled and Walt was told that under no circumstance could the candidate ever meet with him. Mearsheimer and Walt are both brilliant academics, any competent US administration would be lucky to have them as part of it. But they can never work in our government because they wrote the truth about Israel. Robert Malley was the lead US negotiator of the JCPOA nuclear deal with Iran. What was his reward for this incredible work of diplomacy, this triumph of peace over war? Well Joe Biden quietly fired him in 2023 and ignobly ended his government career. Then Biden sent the FBI to harass and investigate him for supposed mishandling of classified information. That’s what good service to our nation gets you now. Your life transformed into hell by the FBI because you tried to stop Israel from dragging this country into a war. You see this all the way down. The media, the arts, the government are all abysmal here. It wasn’t always so. Part of the cause is the systematic exclusion of *anybody* who is critical of Israel. Those who advance within these systems are either explicit Zionists or just spineless cowards who learn to keep their mouths shut. What good is that? Who wants to listen to these people and what passes for our political discourse? There are no worthwhile public intellectuals left in the mainstream. There was once a time when tens of millions of Americans could see Gore Vidal on their TV every other week. After 9/11 Vidal was slandered as a crank and an antisemite by Zionists and their lackeys. Today a young Gore Vidal would never even be let through the door by them. This is what we’ve lost. There are so many brilliant people in this country who are excluded from any influence while our worst mediocrities are elevated. Our culture is dominated by nepo babies and strivers. To have any chance of saving this country we need to demand truth in all things. That starts with truth about Israel. Every politician, every entertainer, every political pundit needs to have their feet held to the fire about this. By and large the people in this country know the truth. The question is whether we will have a government and a culture that represents us.
