⛩️ Shrine Etiquette in Japan
If you’re visiting a Japanese shrine, these seven simple customs will help you show respect and enjoy the experience.
① Bow lightly before passing through the torii gate.
② Walk along the sides of the approach path.
(The center is traditionally considered the path of the deities.)
③ Purify your hands and mouth at the temizuya (purification basin).
(Do not touch your mouth directly to the ladle, and avoid letting your lips touch it.)
④ Offer a coin at the offering box.
⑤ Pray with the traditional ritual
Two bows, two claps, and one final bow.
⑥ Keep your voice down and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
⑦ Take all of your trash home with you.
⛩️✨ Most importantly, show respect for the sacred place you are visiting.
