🚨 NEW: Boston’s near-unanimous council just told Mayor Wu to put the veterans money back. Wu’s FY27 budget slashed Veterans Services by 14.6% — a $724,000 cut — even as her overall $4.9 billion city budget grew. US Navy veteran Councilor Ed Flynn, who served in Operation Enduring Freedom, led the push to reverse it. Flynn, telling Mass Daily News: “It was a significant mistake for any city councilor not to support veterans and military families during this budget debate. Any cut to veterans services or programs or a veterans budget is unconscionable. We must not balance the city budget on the back of veterans or military families!” The resolution passed with the council overwhelmingly behind Flynn. One councilor refused to take a side: Sharon Durkan, one of Mayor Wu’s closest allies, voted “present” — citing “procedural concerns” about whether the council should use a resolution instead of a budget amendment. Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata was absent. Veterans groups are outraged and the same council voted in 2023 to cut $900,000 from the veterans department before public outcry forced a reversal — a vote a former councilor publicly apologized for. Boston is running a $48 million deficit. Property taxes have jumped double digits two years in a row. And one of the mayor’s first move was to take it out of veterans’ programs.
