I have made a 20 minute video of my talk at the Autism Show yesterday on the topic of recovering from burnout. It is aimed at autistic young people, but parents and professionals said it was helpful for them too. You can watch it here: youtu.be/l_LA35VXv9g?si…

(1/4) “While we can consciously choose to conceal authentic Autistic expression as a way to avoid stigma; masking is also an unconscious projection of acceptability in an effort to avoid traumatic situations that arise from our differences. Projecting acceptability does not...

Eliza, an illustrator who used drawing to process her emotions around her family’s awful experiences of school trauma, is offering a webinar on how you might draw your story (even if you can’t draw!) ✍️

What I learnt early on was my rage and sadness in those emails went unanswered. I felt exposed, I had shared with those who were not going to hear what I said. So I began to draw, first with no aim at all. I drew old photos before all this happened to us.1/

Just back from a wonderful poetry reading at my children's school. This was one of my daughter's contributions to the evening. I know I will never have the vision to write anything as beautiful as "I will unbutton the sea from the sky..." (Thank you @CalebParkin for guiding her)

Got my copy! Out June 21st I’m so happy to share the next book I’ve doodled for @LauraKerbey ❤️❤️❤️ So much insight and an authentic voice for young people to relate to. Demand avoidant or not this will be invaluable to every neurodivergent household raising a teen. @JKPBooks

On today’s episode of “Kas complains about the mental hospital”, for some reason whoever is in charge decided to spend money on… this. Which doesn’t feel dystopian or patronising or like a waste of money at all

Tests aren't the ultimate measure of success & they don't define our worth. Our minds are unique & our strengths go far beyond what can be measured on a test paper. There are alternative paths to success that work for our strengths & interests. #Autism

I'm really surprised - but also keen to contribute to plugging the gap - that there don't seem to be m/any peer reviewed papers that I can easily find on autistic joy. I am looking for at least one half decent working definition I can operationalise for a piece I am writing and am coming up short. It's not appropriate to the task to only offer my own - hence me asking if anyone knows of a decent, referenceable definition. #AskingAutistics

@MrLeeDaviid @KieranRose7 It can also be more subtle/insidious. I’ve observed teachers giving positive reinforcement to autistic pupils when they’ve forced themselves to look at the teacher.

@MrLeeDaviid @KieranRose7 I work in assessment & have met a lot of autistic children & young people. “Look at me (/when I’m talking to you)” is used commonly. All your own personal experience teaches you is that it has not happened to you/ have not heard it said. I’ve seen it firsthand in schls too

1/2 This language & statement highlights the lack of training received & understanding held of Autistic experience by so many teachers It also shows the lack of understanding of the impact of stigma via implicit micro-aggressions in normative environments on identity development

@need_coffee_now Nobody would 'force' a young person with autism to make eye contact. You're talking nonsense.
