@johnpalmer You think over 4 billion people from across the world are going to do this mental calculus on the spot in a blind confidential vote instead of going down the path of least resistance.

- If all humans are rational, everyone picks red. - But we know many humans are not rational - Therefore, red means 100% survival, but greater chance non-rational humans die - Blue increases chance all humans live, including non-rational ones So it just comes down to if you think it’s good for non-rational humans to exist.
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@Pedestrian21 @ButterWalf @fambramb Yes for me actually that's generally true. I think that you fundamentally have less value than even someone pressing blue due to moral luck, so if the world is worse because principled people are no longer around due to your choice, I am totally unconcerned with your well being.

Everyone is put in front of a red and blue button The blue button requires 50%+ to press it to activate cold fusion making energy essentially free for everyone But if 50%+ press the red button the reactor backfires sending a charge killing anyone who pressed the blue button

@WatcherontheWeb Just the other day, we were being inundated with videos of Indians dying with people around them standing around doing nothing to help. Now we're to expect they'd throw away their life to save others?

To the people saying "PrEsSiNg ReD iS lOw TrUsT" Yes..... If you read the question it's GLOBAL.... You are litterally voting against the 3rd world This is the very definition of a "low trust" environment Were you picturing only your local city voting or something?

@Pedestrian21 @fambramb If any majority of people, even a tiny one, select Blue then no one is harmed. If a majority, even a very, very large majority, select Red then millions, possibly billions of people will die. This will plunge the world into utter chaos and cause even more suffering and death.

@Mitchendo64 @suiseifan322 I'm not gonna put my trust in a chronically online Internet vote when the census is all 8 Billion of us. Eight. Billion.

@Pedestrian21 @EnderSword @candlecav Right, but the opposite scenario is that you live and your child dies. RED parent always prioritizes parent's survival over the child's unknown choice

Okay, I've gone round-and-round on this, and I'm still a Red-button voter, and here's why. The situation is this: you are suddenly in a booth, with the buttons in front of you. You know all 8.3 billion people on earth are voting. You know at least some will vote each way, including children and mental incompetents for whom it's basically a toss-up. You have no idea what the outcome will be. All you can do is make a prediction based on what you know of human nature. My prediction, based on what little I know of human nature, is a majority-Red vote. This is because most ordinary people, faced with the dilemma, will see it simply as A - I will definitely live or B - 50/50 chance I die. The kind of complex moral calculation you have to make to see the argument behind a Blue vote is simply not going to occur to or persuade the *majority* of *ordinary* people, globally. Now, if I am *right* about human nature, then a Blue vote, for me, is simply suicide. I die, I save nobody, and whoever of my family is left alive have to face the new world without me. But if I am *wrong* about human nature, then the Blue vote gets the majority, and nobody dies, including me. So for me, in that moment, behind that veil of ignorance, knowing that my ONE vote will NOT be the deciding one among countless millions, the ONLY sensible choice - is Red.

@ButterWalf @fambramb So you just don't care about what happens to the people who survive in the worst case scenario. The only thing that matters is your color winning.

@Pedestrian21 @fambramb If more than 50% of people make the correct decision then every single person will survive and there will be no "those left behind" to be concerned about. Almost like 1 choice means 0 people die and the other choice ensures untold mass deaths. Clearly you've accepted mass death

@mayaofspring I was a red button pusher because I thought most people would push red. After the original and aella’s poll, I switched to a blue pusher. Still being a red pusher after these polls mean that you want to signal how logical you are in the same way you believe blue pushers larp.

@EnderSword @candlecav Wouldn't having a child make most people want to ensure their survival for their kids sake over playing the Death Gambit? If your child picks red and you pick blue and lose, you just made them an orphan or worse of no one else is there to take care of them

@candlecav But none of your reasoning seems to account for people with connections to a specific person in the children risk group. That 'too young or lack mental to understand' group is like 10% of the population. So their direct family is over 20% Their Extended family is like 70%

@acidiclemon2 @candlecav 60%? In a spontaneous compulsory anonymous blind vote with 0 outside influence, you think almost 2/3 of the entire global population is going to pick "DIE*" with terms and conditions over "SURVIVE" with no added conditions? 20-25% tops and that's being generous.

@candlecav My prediction is that the original problem will get a blue majority I would predict blue up until about a 60% threshold. Beyond that the specific details of how the vote is actually carried out change the likely outcome This is called a schelling point in game theory

It's far more likely for blue to get a simple majority than red to get 100%, just admit you only care about your own safety and don't care about anybody else instead of trying to dress it up as "logical" and "practical" when it really isn't

Red button pushers going "Blue button pushers are self-destructive idiots who'll choose the obvious worst option for no reason and complain about when they inevitably get destroyed" as if blue hasn't gotten the majority every time this poll happens
CinnamonToastKen@cinnamontoastk

This red button/blue button discourse is wild. 100% red saves everyone no consequence 51% of blue saves everyone no consequence 51% red kills all of blue but they frame it like its blues fault they had to kill them even though red is the only choice that causes anyone to die.

@ltsKairos @Hotands15041504 @Id10tzQuery You trust >50% of the entire global population to pick the DEATH button over the SURVIVE button in a blind anonymous vote with 0 outside input? Just because there are two options, it doesn't mean the odds are 50-50.

@Hotands15041504 @Id10tzQuery This is actually untrue. Because the most amount of lives saved (aka decreasing kill count) is 100% saved (or 0 kill count) if blue has 50.1% of the votes and every % above that up to a 100% Since all of the outcomes where blue wins there’s not a kill a count at all you’re wrong
